Åland Residents Travel on Finnish Passports — Here's What That Means for Dubai Entry
Åland is a self-governing, demilitarised region of Finland, not an independent state, so its residents hold Finnish nationality and travel on Finnish passports (a small number are issued in an Åland-marked variant, but they carry the same Finnish nationality). As Finnish and therefore EU/Schengen passport holders, Åland residents receive a free entry stamp on arrival in the UAE, valid for stays of up to 90 days, under the UAE's Schengen-wide visa waiver that has applied since 6 May 2015. No advance visa application, embassy visit, or online e-visa purchase is required.

Why Every Trip From Åland to Dubai Starts With a Connection
Mariehamn Airport (MHQ), Åland's only airport, serves just three destinations: Helsinki, Stockholm, and Turku — there is no long-haul service direct from Åland. The practical route is a short hop to Helsinki, then a nonstop onward flight to Dubai. That Helsinki–Dubai leg has historically been seasonal with Finnair (running through the winter months), but from 1 October 2026 Emirates is adding a daily, year-round nonstop on the same route, giving Åland travellers a reliable connection through Helsinki at any time of year rather than only in winter.
Timing a Trip Around Flight Seasons and Åland's Short Summer
Two separate calendars are worth lining up. Dubai is most comfortable for sightseeing from November through March, avoiding its hot, humid summer. Åland, meanwhile, has its own short tourist season from roughly May to August, when ferries, local flights, and accommodation are at their busiest with visitors arriving on the island rather than leaving it. Booking a Dubai trip in the Nordic winter avoids competing with Åland's own peak season and lines up with Dubai's more pleasant weather.

Åland uses the euro, the same as mainland Finland. Unlike a currency pegged to the US dollar, the euro floats against the UAE dirham, so a fixed conversion figure would go stale within weeks.
