Bermuda Passports: Which UAE Entry Route Applies?

A traveller leaving Bermuda for Dubai should first check the nationality printed inside the passport they intend to use. A full British Citizen passport generally qualifies for a free UAE visitor visa on arrival, allowing up to 90 days during a 180-day period. A Bermuda-issued British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) passport is a different document, and its UAE entry treatment needs checking before departure. If you are travelling on that passport, review the Dubai visitor visa application process only after confirming which permission applies to you.

The passport detail that changes your trip

Many Bermudians have both British Overseas Territories citizenship and British citizenship. British nationality legislation granted British citizenship to most existing BOTCs in May 2002, but that does not turn every BOTC passport into a passport describing its holder as a British Citizen. Check the nationality field rather than relying on the word “British” on the cover, your birthplace, or the passport issuing office.

The UAE publishes visa exemptions by nationality. Its United Kingdom exemption is supported by specific UK travel guidance for holders of full British Citizen passports. The same UK guidance tells people with other categories of British nationality to check their requirements separately.

Bermuda-issued BOTC passportObtain passport-specific confirmation before travel; a pre-arranged UAE visa may be necessary

You can check the UAE government’s current visa-exemption information. For an unusual British nationality classification, obtain confirmation from the UAE immigration authority or relevant UAE embassy, and ask the airline to check the exact passport you will present.

If you hold both British passports

When you have a valid full British Citizen passport as well as a BOTC passport, the British Citizen document normally offers the simplest route for a short Dubai holiday. Give the airline the details of the passport you will use to enter the UAE. Bring both passports if necessary for your other travel rights, but keep the UAE arrival and departure records consistent with the document used for UAE admission.

A passport does not gain the British Citizen visa benefit solely because its holder also has British citizenship. If the passport available to you is the BOTC version, ask for confirmation rather than assuming the arrival officer can determine another nationality status from a supporting document. If your British Citizen passport has expired, consider whether renewing it is more suitable than applying for a separate UAE visa.

The 90-day allowance is cumulative

For holders of qualifying full British Citizen passports, the UAE visitor permission lasts up to 90 days within a 180-day window beginning on the first entry. You may make one longer visit or several shorter visits. Leaving Dubai does not automatically reset the allowance. For example, two visits of 30 days each would use 60 days of the relevant allowance, leaving at most 30 days within that same period.

Keep your arrival and departure dates together for any repeated UAE trips. A hotel booking for a later trip is not evidence that a fresh 90 days has begun. Before arranging an extended return visit, check your remaining permitted stay with UAE immigration rather than interpreting the date yourself.

Start with a passport-validity check

UK guidance for visiting the UAE on a full British Citizen passport requires at least six months of passport validity after your arrival date. A different threshold may apply to some residents or travellers remaining in international transit, but those are separate situations. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before relying on visitor admission.

Also make sure your ticket name matches your passport exactly. A surname difference between a BOTC and British Citizen passport can delay airline verification. Bring any supporting evidence needed to explain a legitimate name change, and resolve discrepancies ahead of travel.

Plan the connection from L.F. Wade

A trip from L.F. Wade International Airport to Dubai normally involves an international connection. The most useful comparison is not simply the lowest airfare: look at the transit country, connection time, luggage arrangement, and passport accepted for each stage. A single booking that checks baggage through to Dubai may be easier to manage than separately purchased tickets.

If you change airports, leave the secure transit area, or need to collect and recheck your luggage, the connecting country may apply its own entry rules. Confirm the carrier’s current schedule before making a booking; routes and operating days can change. A connection that looks convenient on a flight search may not work for your particular passport.

A US connection needs its own document check

Bermudian passport holders with Bermudian status may have a different US admission route from travellers using full British Citizen passports. The Government of Bermuda confirmed in August 2026 that eligible Bermudians travelling on valid Bermudian passports generally retain visa-free US admission, subject to the normal conditions. Its earlier advice stressed the significance of the Bermudian-status observation in a BOTC passport.

A British Citizen passport is assessed under the US rules for that nationality, which can involve an approved ESTA where eligible. If you have both passports, decide which one satisfies the US transit and UAE arrival requirements rather than copying information from one reservation to another. L.F. Wade has US preclearance facilities, so allow time for those checks before departure.

For a connecting flight through the United States, verify current admission requirements directly with the carrier and US authorities. The UAE visitor visa does not grant permission to transit another country. This check is especially useful for a family whose passports show different British nationality categories.

Connecting through London is different

A journey through London has its own practical advantage for someone holding either form of British passport, but it is still worth checking whether your bags are through-checked and whether you will pass UK border control. Bermuda government guidance says both BOTC and British Citizen passport holders are exempt from the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation requirement when travelling on those passports.

Do not confuse a UK transit permission with UAE admission. You may be eligible to connect in London and still need your UAE documents checked separately.

Travelling as a family with different passports

Each adult and child is assessed using their own travel document. A parent travelling on a British Citizen passport does not automatically give a child with only a BOTC passport the same UAE entry route. Check every family member’s nationality field before making non-refundable plans. The same applies to a spouse who lives in Bermuda but holds a passport from another country.

For a group with mixed passports, prepare a simple record of each person’s passport type, expiry date, connection requirements and expected UAE admission basis. This is more useful than applying for the same tourist visa product for everyone. If one member needs a visa arranged in advance, you can ask about the {link("/contact", "appropriate visa-support route")} without making an unnecessary application for those qualifying for free arrival permission.

When a visa must be arranged in advance

A traveller using a BOTC passport without confirmed arrival eligibility should establish the applicable UAE visa route before submitting payment or boarding a flight. Where advance permission is required and a tourist product is available for that passport, the choice usually depends on how long the visit will last and whether the itinerary includes a departure and return to the UAE.

A single holiday with one UAE arrival may be suited to a 30-day single-entry visa, if eligible. A longer uninterrupted visit may call for a 60-day single-entry option. A journey involving another country between UAE visits may require a multiple-entry product instead. These are alternatives to compare for visa-requiring travellers, not purchases everyone from Bermuda needs.

Before selecting a paid package, confirm the application can actually be processed for the precise nationality shown on your passport. Check the total charge and product conditions before paying.

Documents for an applicable visa application

For a passport that requires advance tourist permission, the exact application checklist depends on the product and the applicant’s circumstances. A legible passport identity-page scan and suitable photograph are typical starting documents. Travel itinerary and accommodation details may be requested for the applicable route; other supporting evidence should be supplied when required, rather than assumed mandatory for every traveller.

You can review the online application steps before completing a submission. Use the same passport information in your travel booking and application. If the visa is issued, check the name, passport number, permitted entry period, stay allowance and entry count before departure. An approved visa and a tourist visit are different from permission to take up employment or UAE residence.

Transit in Dubai versus entering Dubai

A connection at Dubai International Airport does not necessarily mean you will enter the UAE. If you remain airside and have a qualifying onward itinerary, the requirements can differ from those for a passenger collecting baggage, moving to another airport or spending time in Dubai. Ask the airline whether your connection requires immigration clearance.

Where a traveller genuinely needs advance transit permission, the 48-hour transit visa and 96-hour transit visa describe different short-stop options. Eligibility, airline arrangements and the actual purpose of the stop determine suitability. Someone already entitled to visa-free visitor admission should not automatically buy a transit visa just to leave the airport.

If your plans change while in Dubai

A short visit sometimes becomes longer because of a family occasion or a flight change. Check the expiry of the permission actually granted at arrival or stated on your visa. If you need more time, seek current advice before the allowed stay ends; extension rules differ by entry category, and purchasing an extension product does not establish eligibility.

The site describes an inside-country extension service, but confirm whether it applies to your present UAE status first. If you submitted a qualifying paid application, the application-status facility can help you follow its progress. It is not a substitute for checking your UAE admission record after entry.

Paying for your trip from Bermuda

The Bermudian dollar is pegged to the US dollar, making US-dollar budgeting practical when you compare flights and hotels. A Bermuda bank can explain how to obtain spendable foreign currency before you leave. Government of Bermuda information also records a foreign-currency purchase tax on applicable local-bank purchases, so factor bank charges into your travel budget.

Dubai businesses normally quote local prices in UAE dirhams. For a card purchase or withdrawal, use the exchange rate and fees applied by your bank or card provider rather than treating an indicative online conversion as the amount you will receive. This is particularly relevant when comparing prepaid hotels, transport deposits and spending money for several travellers.

Who can help if a passport is lost?

British nationals abroad, including BOTCs, may seek consular help from the UK’s diplomatic network. If you lose your passport in the UAE, contact the British Embassy in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and the relevant passport authority for advice on emergency documentation. A replacement or emergency document may need separate airline and UAE exit checks.

For help deciding whether your exact passport requires a paid visitor visa, contact the immigration authority or the appropriate UAE diplomatic office. For questions about an eligible application through the site, use the available contact channel. It is far better to settle the passport classification before booking than to arrive with the wrong visa assumption.

The right next step for a Bermuda traveller

If you hold a full British Citizen passport, confirm its validity and your remaining visa-on-arrival allowance, then plan your connections. If you will travel on a Bermuda-issued BOTC passport, establish the UAE entry requirement for that exact document before considering a tourist visa service. For families, complete the passport check for every person. Once that is clear, you can choose flights and any necessary visa assistance with confidence.
