No Visa on Arrival: Plan Your UAE Visa Before Leaving Ouagadougou

Q: My cousin in Dubai says I can get a visa at the airport. Does that work with a Burkinabe passport?

No. Visa on arrival is limited to specific nationalities, and Burkina Faso is not among them. Without a visa approved in advance you cannot enter the UAE, so sort it out before you pay for non-refundable tickets.

Q: My passport is the older ECOWAS-branded version. Can I still use it for my Dubai trip?

Yes, as long as it hasn't expired. When the Alliance of Sahel States passport entered circulation on 29 January 2025, the authorities confirmed that older passports stay valid until their expiry date. If yours is close to expiring, renew it first and apply for the UAE visa with the passport you will actually carry.

Q: My connecting flight home via Addis Ababa was cancelled, and my UAE visa ends in three days. What should I do?

Rebook with the airline straight away and sort out your visa status before the expiry date. Since 11 February 2026, a visa's end date has been a hard deadline: each day over it costs AED 50, with no grace days. Any extension has to be approved by the UAE immigration authority.

Q: We're a family of four from Bobo-Dioulasso planning a Dubai holiday. Do the children need their own visas?

Yes. Every traveller on a Burkinabe passport needs an approved UAE visa, children and babies included, so apply for each family member by name. The yellow fever certificate rule applies from nine months of age, so pack each older child's vaccination card.

Q: I work for a company in Ouagadougou and want to spend a few months in Dubai working remotely. Will a tourist visa do?

Not really. Visit visas are meant for trips, not months of work. The UAE has a separate one-year virtual work visa for staff of companies based abroad. Applicants show evidence of their overseas employment and a salary certificate showing USD 3,500 or above (or its equivalent in another currency). They also need health cover and a medical fitness result.

Q: I'm travelling to Abu Dhabi on a Burkinabe service passport for an official meeting. Do I need a visa?

No. A memorandum of understanding the two governments signed on 28 January 2018 exempts holders of Burkinabe diplomatic and service passports from UAE visas, according to Burkina Faso's embassy. The exemption does not cover ordinary passports, so colleagues travelling on those still need visas.

Burkina Faso passport holders can't pick up a visa when they land in the UAE. As a result, the Dubai visa for Burkina Faso passport holders needs approval before the trip begins. Getting there takes planning too. No airline flies non-stop from Ouagadougou to Dubai, and the UAE asks travellers coming from countries with yellow fever risk, Burkina Faso among them, for a vaccination certificate.

Connecting through Addis Ababa or Istanbul

Ethiopian Airlines, through Addis Ababa, and Turkish Airlines, through Istanbul, both serve Ouagadougou and fly on to Dubai International. Gulf schedules are still recovering from this year's regional disruption. Turkish Airlines has resumed its Dubai flights and Ethiopian's UAE services are operating, but timings can change at short notice, so check your booking again a few days before departure. Dubai is four hours ahead of Burkina Faso all year.

If the only good connection leaves within days, express processing for a last-minute Dubai visa is the faster option, though only the UAE immigration authority can approve it.

Do Burkinabe passports need a visa in advance?

Yes. Burkina Faso doesn't appear on either of the UAE's arrival-visa lists, so anyone travelling on an ordinary Burkinabe passport needs a visa approved before departure. There is no way to arrange one at Dubai airport, so build the application into your plans before you pay for flights.

In June 2026 the UAE extended visa on arrival to residents of the US, the EU, the UK and several other countries, but only for six nationalities. The only African ones are Kenya and South Africa.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate. The UAE requires one from travellers arriving from countries with yellow fever risk, and Burkina Faso is on that list.
Cash on arrival. The embassy says travellers must carry at least AED 3,000 when they land and warns that those without it can be refused entry.
No codeine without permission. The UAE treats medicines containing codeine as narcotics, banned even in milligram amounts, and controlled medicines need an online import authorisation before travel.
No CBD e-cigarettes. Vapes containing CBD oil are strictly prohibited.
