Dubai Visa for Swiss Citizens

A Dubai visa for Swiss citizens is usually not something you need to buy for a short holiday. Holders of ordinary Swiss passports qualify for free UAE entry permission, with a total of 90 days available during any 180-day period. Before arranging flights, check the passport you will actually travel on and the time already spent in the Emirates. The Dubai Visitor Visa travel guide explains the wider entry process for companions whose nationality may require an advance application.

Start With the Swiss Passport, Not an Application

Switzerland appears on the UAE's visa-exemption list. The UAE Embassy in Bern also confirms that Swiss passport holders do not need to arrange an entry visa before travelling. The appropriate entry record is issued at the UAE border, subject to normal immigration checks. The permission applies across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates; it is not a Dubai-only document.

It is commonly called a 90-day visa on arrival, even though Swiss visitors do not submit a conventional paid tourist-visa application before departure. Bring the same valid passport used for your airline reservation. A Swiss identity card alone should not be treated as sufficient for international arrival. If you hold a different passport, being born in Switzerland or speaking a Swiss national language does not transfer the Swiss exemption.

Put Every UAE Visit on One Calendar

Ninety days in a rolling 180-day period is a shared allowance, not 90 new days each time you pass through passport control. If you spend several weeks in Dubai, return to Switzerland and fly back later, those earlier UAE days may still count. A short excursion outside the Emirates does not automatically reset your balance.

Keep a list of your entry and departure dates before booking another trip. Count every stay in the UAE, including visits to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. For example, a traveller who spent 40 days in the UAE and returns within the same relevant period does not start again with an unused 90 days. The precise remaining allowance should be confirmed against the immigration record, especially if visits were close together or an earlier stay was extended.

Zurich, Geneva and Basel Departures Need Different Checks

Swiss travellers may begin in Zurich, Geneva or the Basel region, but flight arrangements vary by airline and travel date. Zurich and Geneva offer significant international connections, while journeys from the Basel area may involve a different routing or a stop elsewhere. Do not assume a particular nonstop departure, fare or schedule will remain available; confirm both the operating airline and any connection rules when booking.

For itineraries on separate tickets, check baggage collection and whether a transit airport requires you to cross its border. Give yourself enough time for changes of terminal and fresh check-in if needed. The UAE entry permission comes into play when you enter the Emirates, rather than merely because your itinerary displays DXB or another UAE airport code.

Take the Papers an Airline May Ask to See

A Swiss passport valid for at least six months from UAE arrival is the baseline for travel preparation. Check the airline's latest passport rules, especially when the expiry date is close. Carry a confirmed return or onward journey, the address where you will stay and access to your booking details. Border officials may ask about the purpose and length of the visit.

Travelling with children warrants an extra look at each child's own passport and any parental-consent documentation relevant to the circumstances. A hotel booking or an invitation from a host can explain where the visitor will stay. These are useful travel records; do not mistake the site's general paid-application checklist for a mandatory four-document online application that every Swiss holidaymaker must complete. Four blank passport pages should not be stated as a universal UAE rule.

Living in Switzerland Does Not Decide Nationality

A Swiss residence permit, settlement permit or address in Geneva is not a Swiss passport. A traveller who lives in Switzerland but holds another country's passport must check the UAE rules for that nationality. Residence status may sometimes be relevant to specific immigration routes, but it does not automatically create the Swiss visa exemption.

This distinction matters for couples, colleagues and families booking a holiday together. One traveller may pass through immigration using Swiss eligibility while another needs an approved UAE entry permit in advance. Before paying for a visa, use the online application information to understand the separate process, then have the actual passport checked. If an application is made, the traveller can consult the application status service with their reference details.

A Conference Visit Is Not a Work Permit

Swiss passport holders often travel to the UAE for exhibitions, conferences, trade fairs and client meetings. Short visits for suitable business purposes may fall within the normal visitor arrangement, but that is different from accepting employment or performing work that requires UAE permission. A conference badge, business invitation or return ticket does not substitute for a work permit.

Be clear about the activity before leaving Switzerland. If an employer is moving you to Dubai, if you plan to reside there, or if the activity goes beyond a permitted visit, the appropriate UAE sponsor and authority should confirm the immigration route. The ordinary 90-day visitor permission should not be used as an informal replacement for a residence or employment process. Ask for a check of your circumstances rather than purchasing the shortest advertised tourist package.

Stopovers, Hotels and Returning Through Dubai

A transit connection is different from entering Dubai for an overnight stay. If you remain in the international airside area and meet your airline's onward-flight conditions, you generally do not need to make a separate UAE entry. If you leave the airport to sleep at a hotel or explore the city, your Swiss passport's ordinary UAE entry permission can normally cover that arrival, subject to eligibility and any remaining stay allowance.

Products labelled 48-hour transit visa and 96-hour transit visa are designed for qualifying travellers who actually require those permits. They are not automatic extra charges for Swiss passport holders. Remember that a second arrival after visiting another country still uses the applicable Swiss allowance; keep both flight itineraries accessible.

The Visa Fee Is Zero; the Trip Still Has a Budget

For an eligible short visit, Swiss passport holders pay no advance UAE tourist-visa application fee. There is no reason to pay for a standard 30-day or 60-day tourist visa simply to take a two-week Dubai holiday under the normal visa-free exemption. The meaningful costs are usually flights, accommodation, travel insurance, local transport, meals and activities.

Make your budget in Swiss francs while remembering that local prices are quoted in UAE dirhams. The CHF/AED rate changes, and card providers may add currency-conversion costs. Check payment terms on hotel reservations and any refundable deposits. If you are travelling with another passport holder who does need a paid permit, compare the applicable 30-day single-entry and 60-day single-entry products only after their eligibility is established. Their displayed private service fees do not describe the price of Swiss visa-free entry.

When the Standard Permission Will Not Be Enough

Some travel plans need an immigration review: a lengthy stay, an almost exhausted 90-day allowance, a change of status, or entry after an earlier immigration difficulty. Do not assume that leaving the UAE for a weekend, booking a different flight or buying a 30-day tourist visa automatically resolves these situations. Obtain advice on the correct route before the authorised stay expires.

Some European nationals may qualify for a separately arranged visit visa after fully using the usual entry allowance, but eligibility and approval must be checked for the actual passport and travel circumstances. The 30-day multiple-entry product and 60-day multiple-entry product explain conventional tourist permits for applicants who genuinely require them. They should not be sold as necessary for every Swiss visitor.

Get a Passport-Specific Answer Before Paying

Dubai Visitor Visa can help assess a mixed-nationality group, explain ordinary tourist-visa documentation where an advance permit is required, or guide a traveller who already has an application reference. An existing entry record or an expiring stay may need a different authority check from a new tourist visa request. Our 30-day inside-country extension and 60-day inside-country extension information relates to eligible visa statuses and is not a guarantee that Swiss visa-free permission can simply be extended through either product.

If there is uncertainty about a second visit, a non-Swiss family member or a complicated travel history, contact the support team with the passport nationality and planned dates. If you decide to use a paid service, review the published refund terms before checkout. For a routine Swiss holiday within your available stay, the best next step is straightforward: verify the itinerary, take your passport and enjoy Dubai without an unnecessary tourist visa purchase.
