Greek Citizens in Dubai: Entry Rules and Longer Stays

Greek citizens do not need to apply for anything before a Dubai holiday. On arrival, a Greek passport is stamped with a multiple-entry visit permit that stays valid for six months and allows up to 90 days in the country in total. Bring the passport itself, because the Greek identity card is not accepted here, and make sure it is valid for six more months at least. The only time a Greek traveller needs a visa from us is when those 90 days are already used, which is when a pre-arranged option such as the 60-day multiple entry visa comes in.

So the short answer to a visa for Dubai from Greece is that, for most trips, there isn't one to buy. The details below cover the cases where that changes.

Greek Passport Holders and Dubai: The Rule at a Glance

QuestionShort answer
Do I apply before flying? No. The permit is issued at passport control.
How long can I stay?90 days in total
How long is the permit valid?Six months from the date it is issued
Can I leave and come back?Yes, it allows multiple entries
Which document?A Greek passport, not the identity card
Passport validityAt least six months remaining
Need more than 90 days?Apply for a pre-arranged visit visa once the 90 days are used

The UAE government lists the nationalities covered by this arrangement on its official visa-on-arrival rules, and Greece sits alongside the other EU member states in the 90-day group.

Identity Card or Passport? What Greeks Need at the Dubai Border

Many Greeks travel around Europe on the police identity card alone and only renew their passport when a long-haul trip comes up. Dubai is that trip. The identity card works inside the EU, but an airline will not board you for Dubai without a passport, so check its expiry date before booking anything.

Six months of validity is the figure to plan around. A passport that runs out in April is already too short for a January trip. If you need a new one, apply in good time through the Hellenic Police passport service rather than in the final weeks before departure.

Children need their own passports too, including babies. A child cannot travel on a parent's document.

Arriving From Greece: The Passport Control Moment

There is no visa desk to visit. The officer checks your passport and stamps the permit, and the date on that stamp starts your six-month window. Have your return booking and accommodation details ready in case you are asked how long you plan to stay; a hotel confirmation or the address of the friend you are visiting is usually all that is asked. Note the stamp date somewhere you will easily find it again.

Six Months, 90 Days: How the Greek Allowance Is Counted

Two numbers work together here. The permit is valid for six months from the day it is first stamped, and within that window you can spend up to 90 days in the country, split across as many trips as you like.

Take a Greek consultant who flies in for a week every month. Seven or eight days per trip adds up quickly, and by the sixth visit the total is approaching the limit. A short running tally on your phone, entry date and exit date, saves an awkward conversation at passport control.

Weekend trips to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah use the same permit, because all seven emirates form one country. Only time spent physically inside the country counts towards the 90 days; days abroad between visits do not.

After the 90 Days: Visa Options for Greek Citizens Staying On

Once your 90 days have been fully used, current rules allow citizens of European countries in the 90-day group, Greece included, to apply for a pre-arranged visit visa. This is where a Dubai visit visa from us becomes useful for Greek passport holders.

Your plan after the 90 daysOption to look at
One more continuous month30-day single entry
A month with a trip home in the middle30-day multiple entry
Two more months in one stretch60-day single entry
Two more months with travel in and out60-day multiple entry

Compare the 30-day single entry visa, the 30-day multiple entry visa and the 60-day single entry visa on their cards below, where each shows its current price and processing time.

If you are still in Dubai when the 90 days are about to run out, ask before the last day. An in-country route such as the 30-day inside-country option or the 60-day inside-country option may fit, but whether you qualify turns on your immigration status at the time of applying, which our team confirms first. Start the conversation a couple of weeks before day 90, so you know which route applies while there is still time to act on it.

Greek Retirees Planning a Long Winter in Dubai

Dubai's mild season runs roughly from November to March, which is longer than 90 days. It is easy to overlook this when planning an escape from the Athens winter. If you plan to stay the whole season, decide in advance how you will cover the extra weeks: a pre-arranged visa for the final stretch, or a trip home for the holidays that breaks the stay into two parts.

Greek-Americans Choosing Between Two Passports

Many Greek-Americans hold both a Greek and a US passport, and both countries sit in the same 90-day group. Do not count on a second passport to add a fresh allowance on top of the first. If one is close to expiry, use the other. Book your flights on one passport, show that same passport when you arrive and leave, and keep the other one at home or in the hotel safe. Mixing them up at the border creates a mismatch between entry and exit records.

Greeks Living in the UK: Residence Does Not Change the Rule

A Greek citizen living in London or Manchester enters Dubai exactly as a Greek citizen living in Athens does. Settled or pre-settled status in Britain plays no part. What matters is the passport you present, and whether it has six months left.

Mixed Households in Greece: Partners and Relatives on Other Passports

Plenty of families in Greece include someone who holds a different nationality. Their entry depends on their own passport, not on the Greek members of the household.

  • Albanian, Georgian, Bulgarian and Romanian passports are in the same 90-day group as Greece.
  • Indian, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Kenyan and South African nationals who hold a valid Greek residence permit may qualify for a special 14-day or 60-day entry route.
  • Cypriot partners travel on the same terms as Greek citizens, since Cyprus is also in the 90-day group.
  • Other nationalities usually need a visa issued before the trip.

For those travellers, you can start the online application from Greece, and family applications are filed together. The visitor visa requirements guide explains the documents, which mostly come down to a clear passport scan, a recent photo and travel details.

From Athens or Thessaloniki: Flights and the Time Gap to Dubai

Athens has nonstop flights to Dubai. From Thessaloniki, Heraklion or the islands, check whether your date has a direct service or needs a connection through Athens or another hub. Before booking, look at the Greek Foreign Ministry's travel advice and your airline's schedule, because air routes through the Gulf have seen sudden schedule changes.

The time gap changes with the seasons. Greece moves its clocks in spring and autumn, while Dubai does not, so Dubai is two hours ahead of Greece in winter and one hour ahead in summer. That catches people out on late-March and late-October trips.

Greek Travellers Connecting Through Dubai

If your flight to Asia or Australia connects in Dubai, you can stay airside without any paperwork, or step out into the city on the same 90-day permit. A Greek passport does not need a separate transit permit.

Fellow travellers on passports that do need a visa have two short options: a 48-hour stopover visa or a 96-hour transit permit. Colleagues joining you on a work trip can use the 14-day business visa.

Greek Professionals on Short Business Trips to Dubai

The 90-day permit covers the usual business visit: meetings with clients, trade exhibitions, negotiations, supplier visits and conferences. It does not cover paid employment for a company based in Dubai. If a Dubai company is hiring you, it sponsors your employment visa and work permit, which is a separate process from a visit.

Frequent business travellers are the group most likely to brush against the 90-day ceiling without noticing, because each trip feels short. If your diary has Dubai in it every few weeks, keep the running tally described above and share it with whoever books your travel.

Picking Dates: Greek Holidays Against Dubai's Seasons

The calendars do not line up neatly. August, when much of Greece takes its summer break, sits at the peak of Dubai's summer, when daytime heat pushes most activity indoors. Christmas and New Year fall in Dubai's most pleasant weather but also its busiest weeks, with hotel prices to match. Greek Orthodox Easter lands in spring, when Dubai is warming up but still comfortable for outdoor plans in the mornings and evenings.

For a quieter trip with good weather, late October to early December and February to March tend to work well. Ramadan shifts about eleven days earlier every year; if your dates might overlap it, expect changed opening hours across the city.

Euros, Dollars and Dirhams for Greek Visitors

The dirham is tied to the US dollar, not the euro, so its value against the euro moves with the euro-dollar rate. Check that rate before you travel rather than relying on what you paid last time. Cards are widely accepted in Dubai.

Our fees for anyone who does need a visa, such as a Dubai tourist visa after the 90 days, are quoted in US dollars, so a Greek bank card is billed in dollars and converted from euros by your bank.

Lost Passport or Emergency: Help for Greek Citizens in Dubai

Keep a scan of your passport photo page and your Greek identity card in your email or cloud storage before you leave. If the passport goes missing, start with a report to the Dubai Police, then contact the Greek Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which can issue a travel document to get you home. Having the scans to hand shortens that process considerably.

Write down your airline's contact details and your hotel address in a note that works offline. On a day when something goes wrong, those are the first things anyone will ask for.

Overstaying on a Greek Passport: Fines and Fixes

Going over the 90 days, or over the dates of any visa you hold, carries a fine of AED 50 per day, and it has to be paid before you can leave. Do not assume a grace period. If something keeps you in Dubai longer than planned, contact us while you are still within your permitted stay, when there are more options than after it.

The cleanest fix is prevention: book your return inside the limit and keep a few days spare for a cancelled flight.
