INTRODUCTION  

To phrase it another way, the Asia Cup is the largest multi-team competition that is not sponsored by the International Cricket Council (ICC). And it is the only cricket competition that takes place on a continent anywhere in the globe. Well before they emerged as a worldwide giant, the Indian nation had already begun building a team for the championship. This is clearly exemplified by the reality that out of the 14 championships that have been played in the history of the competition, they have featured in 10 of them.  

India has been victorious in seven of the tournament's 14 iterations. Sri Lanka is now in possession of five of them. And Pakistan was successful in claiming both of the remaining ones. The Asia Cup has grown from a competition with just three teams, in which India has crowned the first-ever winners with only two wins, to competition with six teams, in which there are now competing.

A Retrospective on the Thirty-Eight Successful Years of the Asia Cup, from the Beginning in 1984 to the Present in 2018 

Since 2008, it has been hosted every other year, and beginning in 2016 and going forward, it will switch between one-day internationals and twenty-over internationals depending on which major tournament is coming up next. For instance, this year it will be played in the Twenty20 format in order to assist the teams in preparing for the Twenty20 World Cup that will be hosted in Australia eventually this year. In preparation for the One-Day International World Cup that would be played in India the following year, the tournament will be played in a one-day version next year.

ASIA CUP DETAILS 

The First Few Years, Along with the Beginnings of the Boycott (s) 

The inaugural edition of the competition was played in 1984. Can you determine where? UAE. It is hardly surprising that it is often considered the "spiritual home" of the Asia Cup. At the tournament, there were participants from India, Sri Lanka, plus Pakistan. One year after claiming the title of global winners, India continued to demonstrate their supremacy throughout the continent by claiming the title of Asian winners by claiming victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

It Being a Boycott 

The following year, 1986, saw the competition move to its current location in Sri Lanka. However, diplomatic ties between India as well as Sri Lanka were not in a particularly positive state. Therefore, India made the decision not to participate, and Bangladesh, which was an affiliate participant at the time, took their place. 

Bangladesh was awarded the license to organize the third edition, which took place in 1988. The number of competing teams grew to four with the arrival of India. A round-robin style was used, and India finished in second place after defeating Pakistan with four wickets and thrashing Bangladesh. India's only loss came against Sri Lanka, who finished first in the standings. The top 2 competitors moved on to the final showdown. And then, in the championship game, the team captained by Dilip Vengsarkar got their payback when they knocked out the team that had been protecting the championship for 174 runs and then hunted down the mark in 37.1 overs to win their second championship.

Part 2 of the Boycott

The reigning champions, India, played host to the competition for the very first time in 1990-1991. Regrettably, at that time, political tensions involving India and Pakistan led to Pakistan's decision to withdraw from the competition. As a consequence, India went on to win the championship. 

There was no announcement made about a substitute, and the competition was once again limited to three teams. One game was played between both teams. And the top 2 competitors battled it out for the championship. 

India won their match against Sri Lanka, however, they came up short against Bangladesh. India exacted its vengeance in the championship match once again, just like it did in 1988, and as a result, the country is now the champion for a record-tying third time. 

The UAE made its first appearance in 1995. Also for the first event since 1984, the competition was held at the Gulf Coast Athletic Association (Gulf Federation). India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, as well as Bangladesh were the four teams who competed in this event. 

India, the team that has won the World Cup the last two years in a row, got off to a rocky start in this tournament. After restricting Bangladesh to 163 runs in their innings, they surged to a victory by nine wickets. And then, in the second game, Pakistan completely dismantled them by bowling them out for 169 runs when they were trying to chase down 267. However, the team captained by Mohammad Azharuddin secured their spot in a third consecutive final by claiming victory against Sri Lanka during their last round-robin game. They went on to claim victory over Sri Lanka once more in Sharjah, bringing their total number of titles won to three.

The Arid Conditions 

The year 1997 marked the beginning of India's championship drought, which lasted until 2008. Their total remained at four despite the fact that they reached the finals 3 out of the four occasions and came in second place each time. They were defeated by Sri Lanka on all three occasions, and Sri Lanka was able to take some measure of their own retribution. And includes a humiliating loss at the hands of Ajantha Mendis at Karachi, when the unknown spinner claimed six wickets to propel Sri Lanka to a victory by one hundred runs in the championship match.

The Elusive Fifth-Place Finish in 2010

An event that will live long in the memory of India. It's not only because they won the championship after a 10-year drought; there are other reasons, too. On their way to winning the championship, they overcame Pakistan in a close game in the last over. The decisive moment came when Harbhajan Singh hit a six off of Mohammed Amir. India needed to score four runs off of the final two frames. Despite the fact that they were defeated by Sri Lanka in their last round-robin encounter, the team captained by MS Dhoni prevailed against them in the final match of the tournament by a score of 81 runs.

Tendulkar's 100th century and Kohli's finest performance of his career 

Both the 2012 and 2014 Asia Cups were held in Bangladesh. Both times, India went back home with little to show for her efforts. In spite of this, the 2012 tournament will be known as the one in which Sachin Tendulkar finally achieved his long-held goal of scoring a hundred in an international cricket match, making history when playing Bangladesh in a round-robin game. 

Then there came a fantastic victory against Pakistan, which occurred after Virat Kohli hammered 183 runs off 148 balls in a victorious pursuit of 330 runs. 

In 2014, India came in third on the standings after achieving victories against Bangladesh & Afghanistan but suffering defeats at the hands of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. As a result, India was eliminated from contention for the championship match. It is frustrating that India was unable to beat Pakistan after putting up a valiant effort to defend their total of 245, which brought the game into the last over. Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed a wicket, but the first two balls he faced only resulted in a single run scored. The team required 10 runs off the remaining six overs. The Indian defence was eventually broken by Shahid Afridi, who hit back-to-back sixes. 

Modification of Presentation 

 In 2016, the Asia Cup was played in a T20 format for the very first time. India breezed over Bangladesh in the championship match, which was cut short due to rain, and won by an eight-wicket margin. After India had reduced Pakistan to 83 runs, Kohli and Amir engaged in a memorable showdown that is still spoken about today. Amir's session on a challenging surface provided Pakistan with a significant amount of optimism, bringing India's score down to 8/3. However, Kohli starred in a spectacular five-wicket victory by playing one of his greatest performances, which consisted of a 49-run score off of 51 balls.

Returning to the UAE in 2018 

Rohit Sharma was in charge of the side as Virat Kohli took some time off following the gruelling tour of England. The beginning of India's campaign got off to a strange start. Hong Kong, a side that had forfeited its ODI status, got excruciatingly close to defeating India in their maiden encounter. However, India won the match. They were trying to score 286, and Nizakat Khan with Anshuman Rath added a remarkable 174 points for the initial wicket, which served as a major wake-up call for India. India will ultimately win the match by 26 runs after holding Hong Kong to a score of 259/8. 

Hardik Pandya was injured during India's second match, which was played against Pakistan. Despite this, India held Pakistan to 162 runs before they were all out. During their victory by eight wickets, Rohit scored fifty runs. In the Super-8 stage, which included the top six teams, India prevailed against Bangladesh and Pakistan while escaping another near-death experience. After already being knocked out for 252 themselves, they miraculously managed to hold Afghanistan at 252/8, thereby ensuring that the match would end in a draw. 

They played Bangladesh in the championship match, where Bangladesh was knocked out for 222 runs. Bowlers from Bangladesh deserve credit as they were able to push the game into the last over. And with that, off the last delivery, India became the champions for a logbook seventh time owing to a leg bye that led to their victory.
