Public-transport fares are deducted when you tap your card on the appropriate reader. For journeys that require both check-in and check-out, the system uses those taps to calculate the fare.

This is why the usable balance matters. A card may have been recharged recently but still show a pending amount that has not yet been activated. Run another balance check after activation before depending on the new credit.

How to Check NOL Card Balance Online on the RTA Website

The official RTA website provides a public NOL card balance check online. For a standard balance enquiry, you can use the card's Tag ID without first registering an account.

1. Open the official RTA NOL balance checker.
2. Find the NOL Tag ID shown on your card.
3. Enter the 10-digit number exactly as printed.
4. Submit the balance enquiry.
5. Review the balance returned by the RTA service.

Use official RTA services when entering card information. A normal balance enquiry should not require your online-banking password or your NOL card PIN.

How to Check NOL Card Balance on a Mobile Phone

Full digitisation of a physical NOL card for tap-to-travel use is more limited. RTA currently states that digitisation of supported Silver, Gold and Blue/Personal NOL cards is available on compatible Samsung and Huawei devices.

If your phone does not support digitisation or card scanning, use the RTA website and the printed Tag ID instead.

Using Your NOL Card for a Journey

For Metro and other journeys that use check-in and check-out, tap the card correctly at both ends of the trip. The system uses those taps to calculate the applicable fare.

The important difference is whether the selected top-up becomes usable immediately or first creates a pending balance that needs activation.

A successful payment does not always mean the value is already available for travel. Website and some Tag-ID-based top-ups can remain pending until the processing period has passed and the card is activated.

If your recharge is not showing:

1. Check the payment receipt or reference.
2. Confirm that the NOL Tag ID on the payment matches your card.
3. Allow the applicable processing period.
4. Activate the pending amount through an approved RTA channel.
5. Run another NOL card balance check after activation.

How to Activate Pending NOL Balance

For top-ups that require activation, RTA currently allows supported activation through channels including nol Pay, Metro gates, parking meters and solar top-up machines.

A normal bus validator cannot activate a pending top-up. Activate the amount before relying on the card for a bus journey.

RTA also states that a top-up on an expired or blocked card cannot be activated.

What Is the Minimum NOL Card Balance?

RTA currently requires at least AED 7.50 in usable NOL balance for public transport.

Pending credit is different from usable balance. If you recently recharged online through a channel that requires activation, activate the new value before relying on it at the gate.

Keeping more than AED 7.50 is sensible when you plan several journeys because the actual amount deducted depends on the fare and zones travelled.

Gold Card Balance

Gold Card users should keep a larger buffer because Gold Class fares are higher than regular fares. RTA's current fare table charges Gold Class at twice the corresponding regular Silver fare.

Why Is My NOL Card Not Working?

A low or unavailable balance is one possible reason, but it is not the only one.

• Low usable balance: recharge the card before travelling.
• Pending recharge: complete the required activation first.
• Expired card: check the card status and applicable RTA renewal/replacement rules.
• Damaged card: ask RTA staff to inspect it.
• Blocked registered card: check the card status through your RTA account or support channel.

If NFC on your phone cannot detect the card, make sure NFC is enabled, remove thick or metal cases, keep other contactless cards away and hold the NOL card over the phone's NFC area for a few seconds. If scanning still fails, use the Tag ID on the RTA website instead.

Which NOL Card Is Best for Tourists?

For a visitor making several Metro, bus or tram journeys, a Silver NOL card is usually the most practical stored-value option. It costs AED 25 and includes AED 19 of initial balance.

A Red Ticket can suit travellers making only a small number of journeys. Choose Gold only if you specifically want access to Gold Class Metro and Tram cabins and are comfortable with the higher fare.

The NOL Travel Card has a higher purchase price and combines a NOL transport balance with participating tourist offers. Whether those offers provide useful value depends on the attractions and businesses you intend to use.

How to Check NOL Card Expiry and Remaining Balance

Standard Silver, Gold and Personal NOL cards have a five-year validity period. RTA's current card-management rules state that anonymous Silver and Gold cards can remain usable for their existing balance for up to two additional years after the normal expiry, but they are not eligible for further top-ups during that period.

The Red Ticket has a much shorter validity: currently 90 days or its applicable trip limit.

Do not discard a card simply because its normal validity has ended if value remains on it. Check the current RTA renewal, replacement or refund route that applies to the card type.

NOL Card Transaction History

Registered card services can provide transaction information. RTA's current Personal NOL card service states that users can view one month of transaction history.

This can help when you need to investigate an unexpected deduction or confirm recent card activity.

If you entered the wrong Tag ID during a recharge, keep the payment receipt and check which card number received the payment.

NOL System Upgrade in 2026

RTA is upgrading the NOL system from card-based ticketing to account-based digital payment technology. On 5 July 2026, RTA reported that the project had reached 72% completion.

RTA currently plans to complete all phases by the end of the first quarter of 2027. As the system changes, some app, card and payment functions may also change.
