Nearly a Decade of Visa-Free Travel

Two Cities, Two Direct Routes to Dubai
Most countries on this site have no direct flight to Dubai at all. Croatia has two, though they work differently:
- Zagreb (ZAG) — Emirates and flydubai between them run direct flights year-round, roughly 13–14 a week combined, with a flight time of around 6 hours.
- Dubrovnik (DBV) — flydubai runs a direct seasonal route timed to the Adriatic summer, typically operating from spring through autumn rather than year-round, also around 6 hours.
- Outside those windows or cities — travellers from Split or other parts of the coast generally connect through Zagreb rather than relying on the Dubrovnik seasonal schedule.
If your trip lines up with Croatia's own high season on the coast, flying out of Dubrovnik can save you a domestic leg. Outside that window, Zagreb is the more dependable option.
A Currency Switch That's Still Fairly Recent
Croatia adopted the euro on 1 January 2023, replacing the kuna the same day it joined the Schengen area — so if you're holding onto old kuna notes, they're no longer usable and would need exchanging at a Croatian bank first. The euro itself floats against the UAE dirham, so there's no fixed conversion rate to quote here; check a live rate close to your travel dates. Dubai runs noticeably more expensive than Croatia for accommodation and dining, so budget with that gap in mind, and keep some cash on hand for smaller purchases even though cards are widely accepted.
Where Croatia's Consular Presence Stands Today
For passport and consular matters, Croatia maintains a Consulate General in Dubai, which is also where Schengen visa applications from UAE-based travellers are processed. Diplomatically, the relationship is still developing: as of 2024, Croatia's government announced plans to open a full embassy in the UAE, and the UAE's own ambassador to Croatia has been a non-resident appointment rather than a locally based one.
