Flying to Dubai From Macau: Passports, Routes and Staff

Holders of a Macao SAR passport have nothing to apply for before a trip to Dubai. At immigration you're given a visit visa on arrival, free of charge, good for a stay of as long as 30 days. That's shorter than the allowance on a mainland Chinese passport, which brings 90 days, so the passport you travel on matters more than many Macau residents expect. The full list of 30-day and 90-day nationalities shows where each passport sits.

Thirty days is ample for a family break, a spree in the malls or a few days of meetings. Planning only gets more involved when a trip runs longer, when you also hold a Portuguese passport, or when someone travelling with you is from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia or Nepal.

Thirty Days on a Macao SAR Passport

The UAE groups Macao with Hong Kong, Brunei, Malaysia and a few other places whose passports receive a single 30-day visit on arrival rather than the half-year, multiple-entry permit given to most European, American and mainland Chinese travellers. The 30 days run from the date of arrival recorded by immigration, and leaving the country ends that visit; when you return, a new 30-day visa is issued at the airport. Relatives travelling on Hong Kong SAR passports are in exactly the same position, which keeps joint planning simple.

Three practical points follow. First, the passport must not be within six months of expiry when you land. Second, the Macao resident identity card that takes you across the border at the Barrier Gate or the bridge isn't accepted in the Emirates, where only citizens of Gulf states can enter on an ID card. Third, the 30 days can be extended once, by another 10 days, from inside the country; UAE government guidance describes this extension for the 30-day group, and the request must be made before the original stay expires. Staying past your permitted date leads to fines when you depart, so note the arrival date immigration gives you.

If your plans clearly need more than 40 days, settle the arrangement before you fly rather than relying on an extension; tell our visa team what you have in mind.

Fitting a Trip Into 30 Days

A three-week holiday over Chinese New Year fits comfortably, with time to spare for a delayed flight. A six-week stay with a brother or sister working in Dubai needs more thought: even with the 10-day extension, the total reaches only 40 days. In that case, shorten the trip, travel on a Portuguese passport if you hold one, or arrange a longer visa before you leave. Count the days from the date immigration records on arrival, not from the day you left Macau, since an overnight connection through Hong Kong or Bangkok can shift your arrival by a day.

If You Also Hold a Portuguese Passport

Many Macau families hold Portuguese nationality as well as their Macao SAR passport, a legacy of the years before the handover. Residents of Chinese descent who hold Portuguese travel documents may continue to use them for journeys abroad, although Portugal can't offer them consular protection within Macau or elsewhere in China. That second passport changes the arithmetic. Portugal is an EU member state, so a Portuguese passport receives the longer arrangement: a half-year permit under which you can spend 90 days altogether, split across any number of visits.

Whichever you choose, use it consistently. Book the ticket with that passport's number, present it to the airline at check-in, and hand the same passport over at Dubai immigration on arrival and departure, so the entry and exit records sit on one document. Swapping passports partway through a trip is how avoidable questions begin.

Check the Portuguese passport's expiry date early. Renewals for residents of Macau go through the Consulate-General of Portugal in Macau, where demand from local passport holders has at times been heavy, so a renewal can take longer to arrange than a trip to Dubai. The Portuguese citizen card, like the Macao identity card, won't get you through Dubai's immigration desks.

Getting to Dubai From Macau

There's no non-stop flight from Macau to Dubai, and most residents connect through Hong Kong International Airport, from where Emirates flies to Dubai. You don't necessarily need to enter Hong Kong to do it. Hong Kong airport runs check-in for participating airlines at the Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal and at the Macau Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, after which a ferry or a transfer coach takes you straight to the airport's SkyPier terminal. Ask your airline whether it takes part before relying on this, and plan to reach SkyPier 90 to 120 minutes before departure. Check the last ferry or coach of the day against your flight time too, as a late-night departure can fall outside the transfer timetable.

Other routes work too. Emirates also flies from Guangzhou, a couple of hours from Macau by rail, and residents of Chinese nationality can cross into the mainland on their Mainland Travel Permit. Flights from Macau International Airport to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur offer further connections. Whichever path you take, the visit allowance only starts once you clear UAE immigration.

Stopping Over on the Way to Lisbon

Families visiting relatives in Portugal often fly Emirates through Dubai, since the airline connects Hong Kong and Lisbon via its Dubai hub. If you stay airside between flights, you never pass immigration and no visa is involved. Break the journey for a few nights instead, and you enter as an ordinary visitor: 30 days on a Macao SAR passport, or the six-month, 90-day permit on a Portuguese one. Holders of both often find it simplest to show the Portuguese passport throughout, so that Dubai and Lisbon see the same document. Book the stopover as part of the same ticket, so a missed connection on one leg is the airline's responsibility rather than yours.

Colleagues and Household Staff From Other Countries

Macau's hotels, casinos and homes rely heavily on non-resident workers, and their passports, not their Macau work permits, decide how they enter Dubai. A domestic helper from the Philippines, Indonesia or Vietnam, or a Nepali colleague from the resort floor, must have a visa in hand before boarding.

The UAE does grant visa on arrival to Filipino, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai nationals who live in certain countries, but only with a valid residence permit from the United States, an EU state, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. A Macau non-resident worker card isn't on that list.

Mainland colleagues working in Macau on their Chinese passports receive the 90-day allowance, which our guide for mainland Chinese visitors explains in detail.

A helper joining the family break can travel on a 30-day single entry visa, which mirrors your own allowance. Should you extend your own stay or use a Portuguese passport for a longer visit, the 60-day single entry visa keeps them covered for the whole trip. A colleague joining a short round of meetings or a trade show can travel on the 14-day business visa.

Every price we list already contains the government charge, a single application can include the whole group, and we take Amex, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. With the flights confirmed, apply for your helper's or colleague's visa using a clear scan of the passport's photo page, a recent pale-background photo and the address where they'll stay. You can follow it through our online application tracker, and approval is delivered by email. Each visa has a deadline for entry, so applying three to four weeks ahead of the trip is the sensible window.

Trade Shows, Tourism Promotion and Meetings

Macau's tourism industry has been courting Gulf travellers, and the Macao Government Tourism Office has taken its stand, along with local hotels and travel agencies, to the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, alongside trade missions to the region. If you're part of a delegation like that, or attending any exhibition or round of meetings, a Macao passport's 30 days are enough. Carry your exhibitor confirmation or meeting invitations with your passport in case immigration asks what brings you to Dubai.

Delegations are often mixed. A sales manager on a Portuguese passport, a colleague from the mainland and a Filipino coordinator can all be on the same flight with three different entry arrangements, so check every passport when the team list is drawn up rather than at the last minute.

Gaming and Hospitality Careers in the Emirates

Macau's integrated-resort expertise is now in demand in the Gulf. Wynn Resorts, one of the six operators licensed in Macau, holds the UAE's first commercial gaming licence and is building Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, about an hour's drive from Dubai, with pre-opening hiring under way. Dubai's own hotels and resorts recruit internationally as well, so openings exist in both emirates.

Travelling on the 30-day visit visa to attend an interview, tour a property or meet a recruiter is fine, but starting work isn't. If you're invited out for interviews, keep the invitation with your passport and book the return inside your 30 days. A job offer leads to a work permit and residence visa, which the UAE employer applies for, and you shouldn't begin, even for a trial shift, until that's issued. Once you're resident, the 30-day limit no longer applies, and you can later sponsor close family members if you meet the income and housing conditions.

Renewing a Macao Passport and Getting Help Abroad

Macao SAR passports are valid for 10 years for holders aged 18 and over and 5 years for those under 18, so children's passports need checking more often. Adults can apply through their Macao One Account and, if they apply at a counter or self-service kiosk, collect the new passport from a document collection kiosk at one of the government's 24-hour self-service centres. Online applicants collect theirs in person. A child's passport must be collected in person by a parent or guardian.

If one parent stays home while a child flies to Dubai with the other, or with grandparents, carry a signed English letter from the parent at home approving the trip, plus a copy of their identity document. Officers at the airport may request such permission, and having it ready avoids an awkward wait.

A missing passport should be reported to Dubai Police before anything else. Then use the overseas assistance service for travel documents lost on a journey, available in the Macao SAR government's public services app: it gives you an application number and a verification code valid for 24 hours, which you take to China's diplomatic missions to apply for a travel document home to Macau. In the Emirates, those are China's embassy in the capital and its Dubai consulate general, which also provide consular protection to Macau residents of Chinese nationality.

Before leaving, photograph your passport's data page and store the image away from your phone, so a lost bag doesn't take every copy with it.

Medical treatment for visitors in Dubai is billed privately, and public health care in Macau doesn't follow you abroad. A travel insurance policy that names the UAE, pays hospitals directly and includes medical evacuation is worth arranging for every member of the family, including anyone on a different passport.

For most Macau travellers, the checklist is short: six months left on the passport, a return flight booked within your 30 days, and, for dual nationals, a decision on which passport to carry. If a helper or colleague in your group needs a visa, start the application once the dates are settled.
