St Helena to Dubai: Passports, the Weekly Flight and Visas

For Saints heading to Dubai, two things shape the trip: which British passport you carry, and the once-a-week flight off the island. With a British citizen passport, Dubai lets you in without any application, issuing a permit good for six months within which you may spend up to 90 days. Travel on the St Helena passport, where the nationality reads British Overseas Territories Citizen, and airline entry data shows a visa as required before departure, unless the passport has been endorsed to show the holder's right of abode in Britain. The UAE's roll of nationalities admitted on arrival names the United Kingdom, and it's the British citizen passport that matches that entry.

Because a single scheduled flight a week normally leaves the island, everything else, from the visa to the timing of a new passport, has to be planned around it.

Which Passport Are You Holding?

Turn to the photo page and read the nationality line. That one line, rather than the cover or the place of issue, is what the airline checks in Johannesburg and what Dubai's officers rely on.

Most Saints hold British citizenship alongside territory citizenship, because UK legislation restored full British citizenship to people belonging to St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Holding the citizenship and holding the matching passport aren't the same thing, though, and only the passport changes what happens at Dubai airport. If you have both documents, travel on the British one, and present it at every stage: the booking, the airline desk and both Dubai border desks.

Whatever you travel on must be valid for a further six months beyond your arrival day. Rules can shift, so confirm with your airline shortly before departure as well.

Applying for a Passport From the Island

Both passport types are printed in Britain by HM Passport Office, and on St Helena the applications are lodged with the Immigration Office at Ogborn House, with fees paid at the Customer Service Centre. For a territory passport, the island government has said the new document usually returns within six to eight weeks of the application leaving St Helena, and you collect it from the Immigration Office.

A first British citizen passport asks for more: a full birth certificate, any marriage certificate that explains a change of name, frequently a parent's birth certificate establishing how the citizenship reached you, two signed photographs, and a counter-signatory who holds a current British or territory passport and isn't family or your partner. If HM Passport Office wants originals, it now writes to applicants directly and allows six weeks for them to arrive, so watch your post and inbox closely.

For urgent journeys, the island can issue a one-year temporary passport to people who meet emergency criteria. It's a valuable safety net for getting off St Helena, but not a document to build a Dubai holiday on.

Children's Passports

Passports for under-16s run five years rather than ten, whichever type they are, so the youngest traveller's document is frequently the one that drops under six months first. Each young traveller requires a separate passport and, on a territory passport, their own visa. If one parent stays on the island while a youngster flies with the other, pack a brief English letter from the stay-at-home parent agreeing to the journey, and attach a photocopy showing the absent parent's passport details, since Dubai officers sometimes ask for it.

Visa Now, Passport Later

If departure is close and you only have the territory passport, a visa is the quicker solution, and it can be arranged online while a British citizen passport application runs alongside for future journeys. For anyone who travels often for work, family or study, the British passport removes the visa step permanently, which usually justifies the paperwork.

Building a Trip Around the Saturday Flight

Airlink operates the regular weekly service between St Helena Airport, on Prosperous Bay Plain, and Johannesburg on Saturdays, and a seasonal Tuesday flight links the island with Cape Town during the southern summer, roughly mid-December to mid-March. Emirates flies to Dubai from both South African cities, so the long-haul leg falls into place once the island flight is settled. Airlink opens bookings up to 360 days ahead, which helps when planning around school holidays, as seats can fill up quickly at those times.

South Africa lists St Helena passports, as it does British ones, among those needing no visa for visits of up to 90 days or for transit, so either document handles the connection. The catch is frequency: miss the Johannesburg connection after a late arrival and there's no flight home tomorrow. Many Saints add a night in Johannesburg or Cape Town in each direction, keep every leg on a single booking where airlines allow, and rely on that South African exemption for the overnight stop.

Dubai keeps four hours ahead of island time all year, since St Helena runs on Greenwich Mean Time and neither place observes daylight saving. Expect to land the day after leaving South Africa, and reserve the first night from that date.

The weekly rhythm matters for a visa too. Visas lapse if unused by a fixed date, and the stay is counted from your day of entry. Apply once the island flight is booked, pick a visa that comfortably spans your days in the Emirates, and leave spare days in case weather or a schedule change pushes the trip back a week.

Arriving in Dubai

At the immigration desk, British passport holders have nothing to complete, while territory passport holders hand over the printed visa with their passport. Officers sometimes ask about your accommodation, so keep your hotel or hosts' details close to hand. From Dubai International, the metro and taxis connect the terminals with the city, and the journey into most central districts is short.

From Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

Ascension and Tristan da Cunha share St Helena's nationality arrangements, so their residents face the same passport question. Tristan has no airport and is reached by ship from Cape Town, meaning islanders usually start a Dubai trip with several days at sea and a stay in Cape Town before flying. The longer that journey, the more sense it makes to settle passports and visas before setting out.

A Dubai Stopover Between England and the Island

Saints travelling between England and St Helena sometimes route via Dubai on Emirates, flying London to Dubai and on to Johannesburg or Cape Town, and turn the connection into a few days' break. Remaining in the transit area needs nothing, and Britain's electronic travel authorisation scheme doesn't apply to territory passport holders, so the London leg is straightforward too. Heading into the city on the British passport brings the normal arrival permit, whereas the territory passport needs a visa beforehand, and the 96-hour transit visa often covers a short break.

Saints Settled in Britain

A sizeable St Helenian community lives in Britain, with Swindon its best-known centre. If you've settled there and travel on the British passport, Dubai is no more complicated than for anyone else in the UK: Emirates flies non-stop from London, Manchester, Birmingham and other UK airports, and no visa is involved. If you live in Britain but still hold only an old territory passport, applying for a British one from your UK address is usually simpler than doing it from the island.

Family reunions often draw relatives from the island and from England. A grandparent coming from St Helena on the territory passport will need either a visa or a British passport, even if everyone else flies in from Heathrow. Family members in England can submit the visa application on the grandparent's behalf, because everything, from form to payment to the approved visa, happens online.

If You Need a Visa

On the territory passport, holidaymakers usually pick the 30-day single entry visa; people on extended family visits take the 60-day single entry visa. If your trip includes a side journey across a border and back into the UAE, such as a few days in Oman, our 30-day multiple entry visa keeps you covered for the return.

If Paying Online From the Island Is Awkward

Card payments from St Helena don't always go smoothly for overseas websites. If that's a problem, a relative in the UK or South Africa can complete the payment on your behalf, as long as the application itself carries your details exactly as they appear in your passport.

You'll upload a crisp copy of the main passport page, a new photograph on a pale backdrop, and your address in Dubai, using the name exactly as your current passport shows it. Government fees are built into our listed prices, and relatives may be added to your file. Once flights are confirmed, start your visa application and track its progress through our visa status checker; approval reaches you by email, ready to print for check-in. With only a weekly flight, applying about a month before leaving the island is sensible.

Counting Days and Planning Longer Stays

On the British passport, the six-month permit starts on your first arrival and the days you spend in the UAE accumulate toward 90. A three-week winter holiday plus a two-week stopover on the way back from England uses 35. If you've used all 90 and want to return before the six months end, British nationals may seek a pre-approved visit visa, which must be granted before travel. Overstaying, even by a day, brings a fine at departure. On a visa, you may stay only as many days as it allows.

Family Members With Other Nationalities

Some island households include partners from South Africa, Zimbabwe or elsewhere, and the UAE decides entry by passport, not residence:

TravellerEntering Dubai
South African, living on St HelenaVisa approved before departure
South African, with a UK residence permitVisa on arrival, 14 or 60 days
ZimbabweanVisa approved before departure

The middle row follows a recent UAE change extending arrival visas to South Africans, among a few other nationalities, who hold a current residence permit from Britain, the United States, an EU country or certain other states. A St Helena residence permit isn't one of them. For any other passport, our visa eligibility checker is a good first stop.

Money, Health and Help Abroad

The St Helena pound is tied to sterling at par, and sterling changes easily in Dubai, though the dirham tracks the US dollar, so the rate moves with the pound; check it shortly before travelling. Paying by card is possible nearly everywhere. Visitors pay privately for medical care, so buy travel cover valid in the UAE that includes medical evacuation, which matters all the more when home is a weekly flight away. Pack regular medication in its pharmacy packaging with the prescription, since certain narcotic and psychotropic drugs need the UAE health ministry's approval before arrival.

Britain's consular officers in the Emirates help territory citizens just as they help British citizens, from offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Should your passport go missing, tell Dubai Police first, keep their report, and ask the British Embassy about an emergency travel document.

Working Contracts Abroad

Saints have a long tradition of working away from home, on Ascension, in the Falklands and in Britain. If a contract in the Emirates comes up, a visit covers interviews and meetings but not the job itself; the employer has to sort out your work permit and residency before day one, whichever passport you hold.

In short: read the nationality line, book the island flight, then sort out the visa or the British passport with weeks to spare, keeping copies of every document in your email. If dates are tight or you're unsure which route fits, ask our visa team before booking the island flight.
