Dubai driving license renewal is mostly an online RTA service. For a normal renewal, you need a valid Emirates ID, a valid eye test and a clear record for payable driving-licence fines. Once those checks are complete, RTA can issue the renewed licence digitally.

A person on a visit visa cannot renew an expired Dubai licence because RTA requires a valid Emirates ID.

When Can You Renew Your Dubai Driving Licence?

Drivers aged 21 or older can renew up to 6 months before expiry. Drivers younger than 21 can renew up to 3 months before expiry.

RTA calculates the new renewal date from the date you submit the renewal request. Renewing early therefore does not simply add years to the old expiry date.

The normal RTA driving license renewal service is more simpler than old paper lists suggest. RTA's live core rules for most residents and citizens are:

Dubai Driving License Renewal Eye Test

You need a valid Dubai driving license renewal eye test for the normal route. The test must come from a centre approved by Dubai Health Authority and approved by RTA.

RTA currently lists the eye-test fee at AED 140 minimum to AED 180 maximum. The eye-test result remains valid for 3 years, so a recent valid result may already be ready in the system.

Digital Licence, Temporary Licence and Physical Card

RTA issues the renewed driving licence digitally. You can access it in the RTA Dubai app under My Docs and add it to supported Apple or Samsung Wallet services.

RTA also states that a temporary licence can remain valid for 5–15 days depending on the card delivery time you choose. This is other from saying the renewal itself takes 5–15 days.

Dubai Driving License Renewal Fees in 2026

The Dubai driving license renewal fees are simple when the licence has been expired for less than 10 years.

For a driver aged 21+ with no late fine, the RTA licence and Knowledge and Innovation charges total AED 320. Adding a basic AED 140–180 eye test gives a typical core total of AED 460–500 before extra delivery.

Optional Delivery and Mobile Eye-Test Services

You do not need home delivery to complete the renewal. The digital licence is ready after the service finishes, and a card is extra for many users.

RTA charges AED 20 for basic delivery, AED 35 for same-day delivery and AED 50 for two-hour delivery. RTA also lists overseas delivery at AED 50.

The live RTA renewal page does not publish a other 30-day grace period before the licence-renewal delay fine starts.

RTA charges AED 10 per month from the licence expiry date. The cap is AED 500. So do not assume a 30-day no-fine window.

A licence expired for more than 10 years does not use the ordinary renewal flow. RTA requires an Evaluation Test.
