Omani citizens can travel to Dubai with just an Omani passport or national ID card, with no visa to arrange. Expats living in Oman are in a different position and need UAE approval before they set off, by air or by road. Depending on profession and residence, that means either the UAE e-visa for GCC residents or a standard tourist visa, which is the route most Indian, Pakistani and other expatriate families in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah end up using.
Dubai Visit Visa Prices for Oman Residents
For an Omani national the cost is nil. For an expat in Oman, the amount depends on which visa you choose, and each option has its live US-dollar price on its card here. Rial cards are converted by the issuing bank, and what checkout shows is what leaves your account.
The GCC-resident e-visa is a separate government route with its own fee and conditions, explained further down, so compare the two before paying.
Omani Nationals Crossing Into the UAE
Oman is a GCC member, and its citizens enter the UAE without any visa. At Dubai International or a land crossing, the officer checks your Omani passport or national ID card; nothing has to be filed or paid beforehand. Make sure the card or passport is in date on the day you travel, and carry your children's own documents, since each family member is checked individually.
The GCC-Resident E-Visa for Expats Living in Oman
This route exists for foreign nationals who hold Omani residence. According to Dubai's official GCC-resident entry service, the profession recorded on your residence must appear on an approved list, and the passport should not expire for at least half a year. Current guidance also expects your Oman residence permit to have a year or more remaining.
An approved permit has to be used within a month of being issued. It allows 30 days in the UAE from the day you arrive, and one further 30-day extension is possible. The resident's spouse, children and live-in domestic staff can be covered too. The application is made online before departure, never at the border.
Two Oman Expats, Two Different Routes
Picture two colleagues at the same company in Sohar planning a ten-day visit to Dubai. One has fourteen months left on his Omani residence, so he can try the GCC-resident route first, as long as his job title appears among the approved professions. The other's residence is due for renewal in five months, which rules that route out, so a 30-day tourist visa is his answer.
When an Oman Expat Should Take a Tourist Visa Instead
If your job title falls outside the approved list, your Omani residence has under a year to run, or you want 60 days or several entries, a standard tourist visa is the practical choice. Profession plays no part in it, and a consultant reviews your documents before anything is lodged.
Indian Nationals Working in Oman
Oman residence does not give an Indian passport arrival entry to the UAE. The special Indian route depends on documents from places such as the United States or the EU, not on Gulf residence. An Indian engineer or nurse in Muscat therefore uses the GCC-resident e-visa if the profession qualifies, and a tourist visa otherwise. Indian spouses and children make the same choice, so look at each person's profession or sponsorship before applying. An Indian who also has American or European documents, a green card for example, may have a separate arrival option, which is worth checking before paying for any visa.
Driving From Oman to Dubai
Many Oman-based families make the trip by car, a drive of roughly 450 kilometres from Muscat. The usual crossing for Dubai is Al Wajajah on the Omani side and Hatta on the UAE side; other crossings serve Al Ain and the northern emirates. Expats need their UAE visa approved before reaching the border, as nothing is issued at the checkpoint for this route.
Confirm that your motor policy is valid in the UAE, or buy temporary cover at the crossing, and keep the car's registration card and your driving licence in the glovebox. Leaving the UAE again by road involves a checkpoint exit fee, so have a bank card or a few dirhams ready.
Oman's Musandam and Salalah Routes to Dubai
Residents of Khasab and the rest of Musandam reach the UAE through the Tibat crossing into Ras Al Khaimah, with the same visa rules as at every other crossing. From Salalah the road journey is long, so most people fly: flydubai and Oman Air run nonstop services to Dubai in about two hours.
Flights From Muscat, Oman to Dubai
Emirates, flydubai and Oman Air connect Muscat and Dubai in roughly 65 minutes, with several departures each day. Oman and the UAE share the same time zone, so there is no clock change on arrival.
Arriving at Hatta or Dubai International From Oman
At the Hatta checkpoint, each passenger in the car presents a passport or, for Omani citizens, an ID card, and expats show the approved UAE visa on paper or on a phone. The driver may be asked for the car's registration and insurance. At Dubai International the routine is the same minus the vehicle papers. Expect a question about where you will stay; the officer has the final say on entry.
Non-GCC Relatives of Omani Citizens
An Omani's visa-free status does not extend to a spouse, child or domestic worker on another passport. Those travellers need their own UAE entry permit, either a companion permit for relatives of GCC citizens or a standard tourist visa. Arrange it before the trip and book tickets in the names shown on each passport.
Hosting Relatives From Oman in the UAE
UAE residents often invite parents or siblings who work in Oman. The visitor applies in their own name, using their own passport and Oman residence details, and does not need the host to act as sponsor for a tourist visa. Share your UAE address and phone number with them, since immigration may ask where they are staying. Documents for an Oman-Based Tourist Visa
- The passport's personal-details page in colour, with at least six months left before expiry when you arrive.
- A current headshot against a plain white background.
- Evidence of how you will leave the UAE, whether a flight or your planned road crossing back to Oman.
- Health insurance recognised in the UAE for the trip; the checkout summary states if it is bundled in.
Keep your Oman residence card with you as well. Names must match the passport exactly, and if you renew your passport after approval you will need a fresh application, because the visa is linked to the old number.
Expat Families in Oman Applying Together
Parents and children travelling on tourist visas go on one application: add every person before payment, uploading each traveller's passport scan and photograph, and remember that every child needs a passport in their own name. Under the GCC-resident route, a spouse and children who live with the resident in Oman can be included in the same request, which keeps a family trip on a single timeline.

Extensions and Overstay Rules for Oman Residents in the UAE
Holders of the GCC-resident e-visa get one 30-day extension. Tourist-visa holders may be able to add time without leaving, for example through a 60-day in-country extension, depending on how they entered.
