Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to Dubai: Entry, Flights and Transit
Citizens of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines don't need a visa to visit Dubai. When you land, immigration stamps your passport with a free multiple-entry visit visa that stays valid for six months. Within that time, your stays can add up to 90 days. The one firm condition: six months of passport validity must still remain when you touch down in Dubai. The arrangement rests on a mutual visa waiver agreement between the two governments, so it isn't a short-term concession.
That leaves three things to plan. First, the route out of Argyle. Second, the transit rules in the country where you change planes. Third, the passports of your travelling companions. Each depends on documents you arrange before you fly, so sort them out before booking.
What the Arrival Stamp Gives a Vincentian Passport
The stamp you receive is a 90-day multiple-entry visit visa, issued free of charge. It's valid for six months from the date of issue, and the 90 days add up across visits rather than running as one block. Say you spend three weeks in Dubai, take a fortnight in Oman and then return. The days in Oman don't count, but every day inside the country does.
There's no form, photo or fee, and you don't arrange anything online before departure. Your airline will still check your passport at check-in, because airlines pay to fly home anyone refused entry. Keep a copy of your return ticket and your accommodation address. Airline staff and immigration officers may both ask for them.
The visit visa covers tourism, family visits and business meetings, but it doesn't allow paid work. Staying past your permitted time brings a fine of AED 50 a day. Emirates notes that only certain European nationals can apply for a further visit visa once their 90 days are used. So plan your return flight inside the limit. Our guide to Dubai visa validity explains how the days are counted.
Where the Agreement Came From
The two countries have had diplomatic relations for well over a decade. A UAE delegation touring the Caribbean later signed an agreement with the government in Kingstown. It waives prior entry visas for holders of diplomatic, special and ordinary passports, as the UAE foreign ministry's announcement records. Ties grew again at the world expo in Dubai. There, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines held its national day, and Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced plans to open a diplomatic mission in the UAE.
Passport Checks Before You Book
The six-month rule runs from your arrival date in Dubai, not the day you book. If your passport would have under six months left on your planned arrival date, renew it before buying tickets. Airlines apply the rule strictly at check-in.
The Passports and Immigration Department in Kingstown has confirmed that you can renew a Vincentian passport up to six months before it expires. It also offers an expedited service for urgent cases. Vincentians living abroad can apply through the mission that serves their country. Examples include the consulates in New York and Toronto and the High Commission in London. Allow extra time, as applications made abroad still depend on processing in Kingstown.
Check that the name on your ticket matches your passport exactly, including middle names. An airline can turn away a worn passport with a loose data page or water damage, even when it's still in date. Emergency travel documents exist for urgent journeys home, so for a planned holiday, travel on a full passport.
Getting From Argyle to Dubai
There are no direct flights between Saint Vincent and Dubai, and Emirates doesn't serve the Caribbean. Instead, fly from Argyle International Airport to one of four cities where Emirates operates: Miami, New York, Toronto or London. From Argyle, each is nonstop or one stop away. However, each country applies its own transit rules to Vincentian passports, and those rules decide which route you can use.
Through Miami or New York: A US Visa Is Required
American Airlines flies between Argyle and Miami, while JetBlue and Caribbean Airlines serve New York JFK. Emirates links both cities with Dubai. The catch is that the US makes every connecting passenger clear immigration, as its airports lack an international transfer zone. Vincentians aren't part of the US Visa Waiver Program. That means you must hold a US visa even if you never leave the airport.
A B1/B2 visitor visa covers the connection, and the US issues it to Vincentian citizens for up to ten years with multiple entries. A C-1 transit visa is the narrower option. Applications from Saint Vincent go through the US Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados, so book the interview well before your trip. If you already hold a US visa, check that it will still be valid on your return journey, not just on the way out.
Through Toronto: An eTA If You Qualify
Air Canada flies between Argyle and Toronto, where Emirates continues to Dubai. Vincentians normally need a Canadian visa. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is, however, on a special Canadian list. Its citizens can use an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead, as long as they arrive by air. You qualify if you've held a Canadian visitor visa in the past ten years. A valid US non-immigrant visa also qualifies. Without either, apply for a Canadian visa before you book this route. Canada's transit visa is free of charge, though processing takes time.
Through London: Virgin Atlantic and Heathrow
Virgin Atlantic links Argyle with London Heathrow, stopping in Barbados on the way. At Heathrow, Virgin Atlantic and Emirates both use Terminal 3, which keeps the connection short. Vincentians don't need a UK visa. At present, passengers who change planes airside, without passing UK border control, don't need the UK's electronic travel authorisation. The government keeps that exemption under review, so check it before you fly.
The position changes if you plan a night in London or your flights are on separate tickets and you need to collect your bags. In that case you pass through the UK border, so apply for an ETA before travelling. For Vincentians without a US or Canadian visa, London is often the simplest route of the four.
Starting in Bequia, Canouan, Mustique or Union Island
If you live in the Grenadines, add a ferry or a short flight to reach Argyle. Alternatively, fly to Barbados with SVG Air or Mustique Airways and join the long-haul flight there. Small aircraft often have tighter baggage limits than international flights, and weather can delay inter-island services. When the island leg is on a separate ticket, leave a wide margin. Better still, stay overnight near the connecting airport.
Arriving in Dubai
Emirates flights land at Dubai International, mostly at Terminal 3. At passport control, the officer checks your passport and records the visit visa, and there's nothing to pay. Tourist SIM cards are on sale in the arrivals hall if you need a local number. Dubai is eight hours ahead of Saint Vincent, and neither country changes its clocks, so the gap stays the same all year.
The journey usually takes more than 20 hours door to door, so plan a quiet first day. The UAE controls some medicines that pharmacies sell freely in the Caribbean. Carry prescriptions in your hand luggage, and leave medicines in the pharmacy boxes they came in.
From Terminal 3, the Dubai Metro Red Line runs into the city, and you pay with a Nol card bought at the station. Taxis wait outside arrivals and run on meters, and ride-hailing apps work too. If you land late at night after the long journey from the Caribbean, a pre-booked transfer or a taxi straight to your hotel is usually the easier choice.
Choosing When to Travel
Dubai's weather runs almost opposite to the Caribbean rhythm. From November to March, daytime highs sit in the mid-twenties Celsius, which makes it the busiest and most expensive season. From June to September, temperatures often pass 40°C, and humidity on the coast makes the heat feel stronger. Hotel rates drop sharply then, while indoor attractions stay busy.
If you're timing a trip around Vincy Mas or the Nine Mornings festival at home, plan Dubai either side of them. A January or February trip usually gives the best balance of weather, prices and crowds. During Ramadan, the dates move each year, so check them first. Restaurants stay open, but daytime eating in public is more restrained, and opening hours change.
Money: EC Dollars, Dirhams and Cards
The Eastern Caribbean dollar is fixed at 2.70 to the US dollar, and the dirham at 3.6725, so the rate between them barely moves. One EC dollar is worth about AED 1.36, and AED 100 costs about EC$73.50. Exchange houses in Dubai deal mainly in major currencies. So bring US dollars or rely on cards rather than EC dollar notes. Shops accept Visa and Mastercard almost everywhere, and telling your bank about the trip helps avoid a blocked card.
Hospitals in Dubai bill visitors directly for treatment, so take travel insurance that covers the whole stay. Our note on health insurance for Dubai visitors explains what a policy should include.
Travelling With People on Other Passports
Visa-free arrival depends on the passport, not on where you live or who you travel with. Friends and relatives from Barbados, Guyana and The Bahamas get the same free arrival stamp. Several neighbouring passports don't. Travellers from Saint Lucia, Grenada and Jamaica need an approved visa before they fly. Our guides for Saint Lucian travellers and Grenadian passport holders explain the steps.
For a spouse or partner whose passport needs a visa, apply before booking non-refundable flights. A 30-day single-entry visa suits most holidays, while longer family stays may need a 60-day visa. When their documents are ready, you can apply now with a scan of the passport and a fresh photo.
After submitting, follow the application with our Dubai visa status checker. Wait until the visa approval reaches your inbox before travelling. Every child needs their own passport, and children with Vincentian passports receive the same free stamp as adults.
If you hold a second citizenship, for example British, American or Canadian, check in, enter and leave Dubai on the same passport. That way the entry record matches your exit, and the airline sees the document that immigration will check.
Work, Study and Longer Stays
Arrival entry is for visits only. If you've had a job offer in Dubai, your employer applies for your work permit and residence. Don't start any job, even as a trial, until you hold that visa. As a resident, you come back in on that permit, and the 90-day limit stops mattering.
Later, residents who meet the income and housing rules can bring a spouse and children on their own sponsorship. Our overview of Dubai family visa requirements sets out the details. Investors and property buyers can also look at the Dubai Golden Visa.
Students on courses longer than 90 days need residence through their university or college, which acts as sponsor. Perhaps you'd like to stay beyond 90 days within six months, without moving there. In that case, contact us before booking flights, and we'll explain which options fit your dates.
If Something Goes Wrong in Dubai
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has announced plans for a mission in the UAE. Before relying on it, ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kingstown whether it has opened. If someone steals your passport or you lose it, go to Dubai Police first for a written report. Then contact the ministry or the High Commission in London about emergency papers for the flight home. Store a picture of your passport's photo page and your insurance details somewhere you can reach from any phone.
For a Vincentian, entering Dubai is the easy part. Get three things right: a passport valid for six months beyond arrival, a connection your documents allow, and visas for any companions who need them. Then the long trip from Argyle takes care of itself.
