Dubai Visa for Maltese Citizens

A Maltese passport lets you approach Dubai travel differently from someone who must submit a tourist visa application before departure. For an ordinary short visit, Dubai visa for Malta citizens usually means knowing the entry allowance, not buying an e-visa. Eligible Maltese passport holders can enter the United Arab Emirates visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. There is no advance tourist-visa fee for that entitlement. The practical decisions start with your dates, passport, complete flight itinerary and everyone travelling with you.

Start With the Entry Right You Already Hold

The United Arab Emirates lists Malta among countries eligible for short-stay visa-free entry. For qualifying Maltese citizens, Dubai visa-free entry is the normal path for tourism. At the UAE airport, immigration reviews your passport and entry conditions; the visitor does not ordinarily complete an online tourist-visa application first. Emirates also includes Malta in its 90-day arrival-eligible group. Being able to enter without prearranged paperwork does not remove border checks or guarantee admission.

The 90-day allowance covers the UAE as a country, not only Dubai. You can arrive in Dubai, take a day trip to Abu Dhabi, then return to Dubai without creating a second immigration stay. A Maltese passport does not, however, grant permission to take up paid employment. If the purpose of travel involves working in the UAE or establishing residence, assess the corresponding permission before making commitments.

A Dubai visit visa is normally unnecessary for an eligible Maltese holidaymaker. Our UAE visitor policy guide describes entry categories for travellers with different passports.

Ninety Days Is a Shared Allowance, Not a New Balance Every Landing

Malta is in the group whose UAE short-visit entitlement is limited to 90 days in any 180 days. That matters to anyone who returns frequently for family visits, exhibitions, shopping trips or a winter escape. Landing for a second visit does not automatically give you 90 fresh days, and changing from Dubai airport to Abu Dhabi airport does not reset the count.

Imagine that you spent 28 days in the UAE in February and another 17 days in April. While both trips still fall within the relevant 180-day look-back, you have used 45 days of the maximum. A proposed later visit must fit around those earlier stays. As time moves forward, older days eventually leave the rolling period, so keep your exact entry and exit dates instead of relying on a remembered total.

Use the official GDRFA 90/180-day stay calculator when planning repeat trips. Its result is guidance, and the immigration record remains decisive. If you have travelled repeatedly or changed immigration status between visits, seek confirmation of your remaining allowance before buying a ticket.

The Malta–Dubai Flight Often Includes a Landing in Larnaca

One detail can surprise travellers booking from Malta International Airport at Luqa. Emirates markets a Malta-to-Dubai itinerary under flight EK110, but the published routing involves a stop in Larnaca, Cyprus. It can be a through flight with the same flight number without being a nonstop sector. Check the full itinerary rather than assuming a single flight number means the aircraft does not land en route.

The current Emirates published Malta–Dubai journey is shown at roughly seven hours and a quarter on the flight listing, but durations, intermediate-stop handling and schedules can change. Other itineraries connect through European or Gulf hubs. For a two-ticket journey, confirm whether baggage transfers automatically and whether you must cross immigration during the connection; a self-transfer may have very different document requirements.

A Maltese EU passport normally makes ordinary entry into Cyprus straightforward, but transit arrangements should still be checked for everyone in the group, particularly companions carrying other passports. Look carefully at overnight connections, terminal changes and minimum connection times. For a quick return journey, compare arrival time in Dubai with the time your accommodation will actually permit check-in.

What to Have Ready at Luqa and at the UAE Border

Although there is no routine tourist-visa form for eligible Maltese citizens, the passport itself is essential. UAE government guidance generally requires a passport valid for at least six months from arrival. A Maltese national identity card is useful at home but is not a substitute for your passport when entering Dubai under this arrangement. The passport must also be in suitable condition for airline and border checks.

  • Your Maltese passport, with sufficient remaining validity and legible identification details.
  • A return or onward flight booking you can retrieve even when your phone has no data.
  • Your first accommodation address, or the details of the person hosting you.
  • Travel insurance appropriate to your stay and any important prescribed medication documentation.

Not every visitor is asked to produce each item at the passport desk, but being able to explain your travel plan saves time. A prearranged visa application may require a scanned passport page and photograph; those are different from the documents routinely carried for visa-free arrival. See the wider Dubai entry-document rules for the distinction.

Travelling Together Does Not Mean Entering on Identical Terms

Malta is home to families and couples whose passports are not all Maltese. A spouse with a Maltese residence card, for example, does not automatically receive the same UAE visa-free privilege as a Maltese citizen. Immigration eligibility is primarily assessed using the nationality and travel document each passenger presents, with any qualifying additional status considered separately.

Before making a joint booking, check each adult and child independently. One person may enter under the 90-day allowance while another needs a 30-day or 60-day visa arranged in advance. If a companion needs help choosing an appropriate route, begin with the visa eligibility and application guidance rather than submitting unnecessary applications for Maltese passport holders.

Children should have their own valid passports. Where a child travels with one parent, relatives or another accompanying adult, ensure parental consent and identity documentation meet airline and relevant legal requirements. Such supporting documents depend on the itinerary and family circumstances, not on a blanket rule that every Maltese family must submit additional visa paperwork.

A Weekend Away, a Winter Stay or Several Short Returns

The right duration depends on how you intend to use the allowance. A three-night city break has minimal impact on the 90-day balance. A six-week stay with relatives uses more of it, while a series of short visits can become harder to track than one longer holiday. The same maximum applies whether you stay in a hotel, a serviced apartment or a family home.

Paying in Dirhams When Your Home Budget Is in Euros

Malta uses the euro; everyday spending in Dubai is priced in UAE dirhams. That makes the exchange-rate decision simple to overlook while planning hotels, taxis and attractions. Compare your card issuer’s foreign-transaction charges with the quoted conversion at a cash counter, and keep a modest payment backup in case a terminal or card is unavailable.

If a merchant or ATM offers to charge your card in euros instead of dirhams, check the conversion carefully. Dynamic currency conversion can carry an unfavourable exchange rate compared with paying in the local currency. The exact result depends on your bank and card, so there is no reliable fixed EUR–AED figure to quote months before departure.

The standard Maltese short-visit entitlement carries no UAE tourist-visa government fee. That does not mean flights, insurance or any separately requested service are free. If you have a different visa category to arrange for a companion, request the full price and inclusions before payment; our visitor-visa price and process overview explains the distinction between governmental charges and service fees.

Meetings and Business Visits Are Not the Same as Taking a Job

Dubai attracts Maltese entrepreneurs, suppliers and professionals for exhibitions, partner meetings and market visits. A normal short visit may cover attending meetings and exploring opportunities, subject to your actual activities and entry conditions. It should not be treated as permission to join a UAE payroll or perform work that requires employment authorisation.

If you intend to live in Dubai, provide ongoing services locally or start employment, identify the proper work or residence pathway. Some visits for job exploration and investment have distinct official categories; those are not interchangeable with a short tourist stay. Where a specific entry permit is required, the documentation, sponsorship and fees are assessed under that route rather than under the Malta visa-free rule.

If You Are Already in Dubai and Your Departure Date Changes

Flight changes, family events and unexpected circumstances sometimes alter an otherwise straightforward visit. First check your actual date of entry and how much of the 90-in-180 allowance has been used. Do not assume you can remain indefinitely just because a booking or travel insurance policy has been extended.

Whether a change of status or another entry arrangement is possible depends on current UAE immigration rules and your personal circumstances. Emirates’ published guidance notes that some eligible European visitors may seek a prearranged visa after fully using their 90-day arrival allowance; availability and approval still require checking against the applicable authority and visa category. Plan ahead, rather than buying an arbitrary 30-day tourist product and assuming it solves an overlong stay.

If you need to discuss a genuine alternative route, contact Dubai Visitor Visa support with your passport nationality, latest entry date and intended new departure date. That information makes an eligibility assessment more useful; the immigration authorities, not a private agency, decide the permission granted.

Malta Has Consular Representation in Dubai Itself

A distinctive advantage for Maltese visitors is that Malta has a Consulate General in Dubai as well as an embassy in Abu Dhabi. The Dubai consulate provides assistance with passports and other consular matters, including urgent situations affecting citizens overseas. Malta inaugurated the Consulate General in 2025, so older travel directories can display outdated contact or office information.

If your Maltese passport is lost or stolen, report the problem through the appropriate local channel and contact Malta’s current consular mission for instructions. An emergency travel document is not simply a duplicate passport, and the replacement process can affect your return booking. Keep a separate digital copy of the passport bio page and your airline confirmation so you can identify your documents accurately.

Before travel, check the latest travel advice issued by Malta’s foreign ministry and follow developments that could affect flights or local safety. Entry permission and a government travel advisory answer different questions: being eligible to enter does not by itself determine whether travelling on particular dates is advisable.

Choosing Useful Help Without Paying for an Unneeded Visa

For a Maltese citizen taking an ordinary trip within the 90-day allowance, the sensible next step is usually to prepare travel documents, not purchase a short tourist visa. The value of a visa-support service arises when another passenger needs advance entry permission, a particular non-tourist status is required, or your existing stay and travel history need careful review.

If an application is genuinely needed, ask which immigration category applies, whose passport it covers, what documents are required and which charges are included. Keep the confirmation and use the application status service for files submitted through the platform. The availability of a tracking service does not mean every visitor is required to open a file.

The simplest preparation is also the most useful: check your passport expiry date, review the full flight route including any intermediate stop, calculate previous days in the UAE, and confirm the entry needs of everybody travelling with you. With those pieces settled, a Maltese traveller can plan Dubai with confidence and without an unnecessary paid Dubai tourist visa application.
