Dubai Baggage Allowance: Cabin, Checked & Airline Rules

Dubai baggage allowance is not one fixed weight for every passenger. Your allowance depends on the airline flying the segment, route, fare type, cabin class and whether the checked-baggage system uses a total weight or a fixed number of pieces.

The most useful number is the one printed on your ticket or shown inside the airline's booking record. Two passengers on the same flight can have different checked-baggage limits because they bought different fares.

This guide explains cabin baggage, checked baggage, Dubai Airport size and liquid rules, power banks, excess baggage, infant and sports baggage, transfer flights and examples from major UAE airlines used for Dubai travel.

Start With the Allowance on Your Ticket

A general baggage table is useful for planning, but the ticket is the better source for the actual trip. It shows the fare purchased and the baggage benefit attached to that booking.

Look for checked baggage, cabin baggage, pieces, kilograms or a fare bundle inside the booking confirmation. On a codeshare trip, also check which airline operates each flight because the airline flying the segment can affect the baggage rule.

Do not assume a previous trip with the same airline had the same allowance. A different route or fare can produce a different result.

Dubai Cabin Baggage Allowance

Cabin baggage is the luggage you take through security and into the aircraft. The airline controls the maximum weight, size and number of cabin pieces.

Several major UAE Economy fares use a 7 kg main cabin bag. Emirates Economy now allows one 7 kg carry-on measuring up to 55 × 38 × 22 cm. flydubai Economy allows one 7 kg bag up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm. Etihad Economy fares now use one 7 kg cabin bag. Air Arabia's UAE fare bundles use a 7 kg main hand bag plus a 3 kg personal item.

These examples show why 7 kg is common, but they do not create a universal Dubai rule. International airlines serving Dubai can use different limits.

Measure the bag as well as weighing it. A light bag can still be refused as cabin baggage if its size exceed the carrier's limit.

Is a Laptop Bag or Handbag Extra?

A own personal item is airline exact. Some fares allow a laptop bag, handbag or small satchel in addition to the main cabin bag. Others count all cabin items within one total allowance.

For example, flydubai allows a personal item within its listed size rules in addition to the main cabin allowance, while Air Arabia uses a 7 kg main bag plus a 3 kg personal item on current UAE fare bundles.

Keep the personal item small enough to fit under the seat where the airline needs that placement.

Dubai Airport Cabin Liquid Rules

At Dubai International Airport, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage must be packed within the airport security limit. Each container must be 100 ml or less, and the total liquid allowance must fit within one litre.

The items should be placed inside a transparent, resealable bag. Dubai Airports lists exemptions for medication, baby milk or food and special dietary needs.

Full-size toiletries that are allowed in checked baggage should normally be packed there rather than carried through cabin security.

Power Bank Rules on Dubai Flights

Power banks belong in cabin baggage, not checked baggage. The power rating should be clearly marked on the device.

Emirates now allows one power bank under 100 Wh. It cannot be used to charge a device during the flight and cannot itself be charged onboard. Emirates also needs it to remain out of the overhead locker, placed in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat.

flydubai now allows one power bank up to 100 Wh in hand baggage and also prohibits using or charging it during the flight. Etihad allows one power bank up to 100 Wh, prohibits onboard use and charging, and needs it to remain protected and accessible.

Do not apply one airline's battery rule to another airline. The cabin-only principle is common, but the number of units, watt-hour limit and storage rule can differ.

Dubai Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage is handed over at the airline counter and carried in the aircraft hold. The ticket may show a total weight, a number of pieces, or no free checked bag at all.

Low-cost and entry-level fares often make checked baggage optional. flydubai Lite has no included checked allowance, while current flydubai Value and Flex fares generally include 20 kg and 30 kg respectively. Air Arabia Basic makes checked baggage chargeable, while higher bundles include selected weight options. Etihad Basic also excludes free checked baggage on current Economy fares.

Never assume one checked suitcase is included. Check the fare name and baggage line on the booking.

Weight Concept vs Piece Concept

Emirates uses the weight concept on many routes and the piece concept on routes involving the Americas and Africa. flydubai can also use a piece concept on partner itineraries.

The system is tied to the route and ticket. Do not move a baggage rule from one itinerary to another just because the airline name is the same.

Maximum Weight Per Checked Bag

Many airlines used for Dubai travel cap one checked piece at 32 kg. That limit is own from the total allowance.

flydubai, Etihad and Air Arabia all publish a 32 kg maximum for an single checked piece under their current baggage rules. A passenger with a total allowance above 32 kg may therefore need more than one suitcase.

A 40 kg total allowance does not mean one 40 kg suitcase is acceptable.

Dubai baggage allowance also works with airport handling rules for very large checked bags.

Dubai Baggage Size Limit at DXB

Dubai Airports publishes an airport-handling rule for large and irregular checked bags. Bags larger than 90 cm long, 75 cm high and 60 cm wide, or bags without a single flat surface, must first be checked at the airline counter and then taken to the oversize-baggage counter.

This is not the same as saying every irregular bag is automatically banned. It means the bag can need the oversized process and extra handling time.

The airline can still apply its own smaller size limit or special fee, so the airline's baggage rule remains important before arriving at DXB.

Dubai Baggage Allowance by UAE Airline

The table below gives examples from UAE airlines commonly used for Dubai trips. Emirates and flydubai operate from Dubai, while Air Arabia and Etihad are often used through Sharjah or Abu Dhabi for flyers visiting Dubai.

Use this table for quick check, then use the baggage line attached to the actual ticket.

Emirates Baggage Example for Dubai Flights

Emirates Economy cabin baggage now allows one carry-on bag of 7 kg. The listed maximum size is 55 × 38 × 22 cm. Premium Economy uses a higher cabin weight, while Business and First use two cabin pieces.

Checked baggage is more complex. Emirates uses a weight system on many routes. Travel involving the Americas or Africa can use a piece system instead. The fare also matters within the same cabin.

This is a good example of why Dubai baggage allowance cannot be reduced to one number. The airline, route and fare work together.

flydubai Baggage Example

flydubai Economy allows one 7 kg cabin bag measuring up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm. A small personal item is also allowed within its listed size limit.

The checked allowance depends strongly on the fare. Lite has no included checked baggage. Value commonly includes 20 kg. Flex commonly includes 30 kg. Business includes 40 kg, subject to the route and fare conditions.

Under the weight system, flydubai allows up to three checked pieces within the total allowance. Each piece must remain under 32 kg.

Buying a cheap fare does not always mean a checked suitcase is included.

Air Arabia and Etihad Baggage Examples

Air Arabia's UAE fare bundles now use a 7 kg main hand bag plus a 3 kg personal item. Basic makes checked baggage chargeable. Value can include selected 20 kg or 30 kg options. Ultimate can include selected 30 kg or 40 kg options.

Etihad Economy now uses one 7 kg cabin bag. Basic has no included checked bag. Value, Comfort and Deluxe on many routes use 25 kg, 30 kg and 40 kg checked allowances.

Both airlines show the same lesson: the fare name matters. A flyer should not copy the allowance from another passenger's booking.

Check your own ticket, not a screenshot from another fare.

Checked-Bag Dimensions and Oversize Fees

Checked baggage has both weight and size rules. A suitcase can be under the weight limit and still be oversized.

Air Arabia now publishes a 158 cm total-size limit for a normal checked piece. flydubai uses different total-size limits under its weight and piece systems. Larger items can move into an oversize or cargo process.

DXB also has its own handling threshold for very large or non-flat baggage. That airport rule works alongside the airline's own size rule.

Check both weight and size before leaving home.

Smart Bags and Removable Batteries

Smart luggage can contain a lithium battery, tracker, motor or charging unit. The battery design matters when the bag is checked.

On Emirates, a smart bag can be checked only when the battery is removable and is carried in the cabin. A smart bag with a battery that cannot be removed can be refused.

Other airlines use similar safety rules for smart luggage. Remove the power source when the airline needs it and keep the battery in cabin baggage.

Do not check a smart bag before reading its battery rule.

Medicines, Documents and Valuables

Keep passports, money, jewellery, essential medicine and important papers in cabin baggage rather than the aircraft hold.

Medicine also has two own checks. Airport security decides how liquids and devices pass screening. UAE medicine rules can decide whether a drug needs a prescription or prior approval.

Carry medicine in its original packaging when possible. Keep the prescription or supporting medical letter with it when needed.

Do not pack a vital medicine where you cannot reach it during the journey.

Separate Tickets and Baggage Re-Check

Separate tickets need extra attention. The first airline may check the bag only to Dubai, even when another flight leaves later the same day.

If the baggage tag ends at DXB, you may need to enter the UAE, collect the suitcase and check it again. That can need enough connection time and the correct UAE entry status.

A through ticket can be simpler, but the printed baggage tag still gives the clearest answer at the first airport.

Read the destination code printed on the baggage tag before leaving the check-in desk.

When Should You Buy Extra Baggage?

Weigh the bags before buying more allowance. A flyer may already have enough weight after checking the fare and loyalty benefits.

If the luggage is clearly over the ticket limit, compare the airline's pre-purchase option before airport check-in. Online baggage can cost less than the airport rate.

Also check whether the extra purchase adds kilograms or an extra piece. Those are not always the same product.

Buy the type of extra allowance that matches the baggage system on the ticket.

Dubai baggage allowance should be checked before buying any extra weight or pieces.

Dubai Excess Baggage Charges

Excess baggage charges apply when the luggage is heavier, larger or more numerous than the allowance on the ticket. The charge can be calculated per kilogram, per extra piece or by a route-based table.

Buying extra baggage before airport check-in is often cheaper. flydubai now advertises online extra baggage at savings of up to 70% compared with airport rates, while Etihad advertises online savings of up to 65%.

Buy extra weight only after checking the existing ticket allowance. Loyalty status, fare upgrades and bundled baggage can change what is already included.

Dubai Baggage Allowance for Infants

Infant baggage is airline and fare exact. Do not assume the infant receives the same allowance as an adult.

flydubai now gives an infant 5 kg of hand baggage and 10 kg of checked baggage when the fare includes baggage. Emirates allows one carrycot or fully collapsible stroller in the cabin if space is available; otherwise it is checked.

Check the infant line inside the booking before packing diapers, feeding supplies, stroller equipment and clothing.

Sports Equipment and Special Baggage

Bicycles, golf bags, skis, surfboards, diving equipment and large musical instruments can use special baggage rules. Some airlines count them within checked allowance, while others use dedicated size or handling charges.

flydubai accepts sporting equipment as checked baggage but can apply size-based charges and advance-notice rules. Etihad counts golf bags within checked baggage from June 2026 and charges extra when the total allowance is exceeded.

For bulky equipment, check the airline's packing and approval rule before arriving at the airport.

Dubai baggage allowance is only one part of a connection; the baggage tag also decides where the checked bag is sent.

Connecting-Flight Baggage in Dubai

On a through itinerary, checked bags are often tagged to the final destination when the airlines and ticket arrangement support through-checking. The baggage tag printed at the first airport shows the destination to which the bag has been checked.

Separate tickets can be different. A flyer may need to enter the UAE, collect the bag and check in again for the next flight. This can also happen when the two airlines do not have a baggage agreement.

DXB and DWC Are Separate Airports

Dubai International Airport uses the code DXB. Al Maktoum International Airport uses DWC. They are two airports and a connection between them is not an airside terminal change.

A flyer changing between DXB and DWC can need immigration, baggage collection, road transport and a new check-in. Build the transfer plan around the airport codes printed on the ticket.

Do not read “Dubai” on both flights and assume they use the same airport.

Restricted and Prohibited Baggage Items

Airline dangerous-goods rules and UAE airport security rules decide whether an item belongs in cabin baggage, checked baggage or cannot travel at all.

Power banks and spare lithium batteries need special care. Sharp items, flammable goods, compressed gases, weapons and some battery-powered devices can also be restricted or banned. Medication can have own UAE import rules depending on the drug.

• Assuming 7 kg is a universal Dubai cabin rule.
• Assuming one checked bag is included on every Economy fare.
• Putting a power bank in checked baggage.
• Using a 40 kg allowance as one 40 kg suitcase when the airline caps each piece at 32 kg.
• Ignoring bag size because the weight is within the limit.
• Buying extra baggage at the airport without checking whether pre-purchase is cheaper.
• Assuming own-ticket bags will transfer automatically.
• Confusing DXB with DWC during a connection.
