A full British citizen passport gets a free UAE visit visa at passport control, so British citizens make no application before flying to Dubai. You can spend up to 90 days in the country during the 180 days that follow your first arrival, and the passport must run for at least six months after the day you land. Living in the UK on another passport is a different matter, because UAE entry follows the nationality on the passport, not where you live. How the 90-in-180 Rule Works on a British Passport
The 180-day period starts on the day you first enter the UAE, and every day you spend in the country inside that period counts towards the 90. Flying out and returning later leaves the tally exactly where it was.
Take a couple from Leeds who arrive on 1 March and stay 40 days, then return on 1 July for another 30. They have used 70 days, so a further visit before the 180-day period closes can last no more than 20 days. After the period ends, the next arrival begins a new one. Children Travelling on British Passports
Each child needs a British passport of their own, and the same six-month validity rule applies. Children's British passports are issued for only five years, so check the expiry dates on the whole family's documents before booking a half-term, Easter or summer trip. Every child receives a free visit visa at immigration, just like the adults, with the same 90-day limit.
Which British Passports Qualify for the Free UAE Visa
The arrival rule is for passports that show the nationality "British citizen". Holders of other British passports, such as British National (Overseas), British Overseas Territories Citizen or British Overseas Citizen, should check their own entry route before booking, because the UK government's guidance for British citizens does not cover them.
Validity matters as much as the passport type. You need at least six months left on the passport when you land, reduced to three months for anyone who already holds a UAE residence permit. Renew early if your passport expires within the next year, so the dates on your booking and passport match.
Medicines and Arrival Checks for UK Travellers
Some prescription medicines that are routine in Britain need approval from the UAE Ministry of Health before you travel. Visitors can usually bring up to three months' supply, or one month for medicines that need approval, so check each of your prescriptions well before departure and carry the doctor's paperwork in your hand luggage.
The visit visa is granted at the immigration desk on arrival. Keep proof of your flight home and the address where you are staying to hand, as officers sometimes ask about the length of the visit.
Flying to Dubai or Abu Dhabi From London and Manchester
Emirates flies nonstop to Dubai from both Heathrow and Manchester, with flights taking roughly seven to seven and a half hours in the air. British Airways' Dubai route has been suspended for much of 2026, with a return planned for the winter schedule; our British Airways Dubai update tracks the latest position. Flying into Abu Dhabi instead changes nothing for a British citizen, because the free visa covers the whole country, not just Dubai.
Clocks in the UAE run four hours ahead of the UK in winter and three hours ahead during British Summer Time, so an overnight flight from London lands in the morning, local time.
UK Residents Travelling on a Pakistani Passport
Pakistan is not on either UAE arrival list, so Pakistani citizens must have a visa issued before departure, however long they have lived in Britain. Many British Pakistani families break the journey to Lahore or Islamabad in Dubai. Passengers who stay airside need no UAE visa, but leaving the airport on a Pakistani passport requires a short transit visa and a confirmed onward flight; our 96-hour transit option allows the longest break.
Indian Passport Holders With UK Residence: Check Before You Rely on Arrival Entry
Indian nationals have long been able to use a special 14-day UAE entry route if they held certain US, UK or EU visas or residence permits. Reports from July 2026 say UK documents on their own no longer qualify, while some airline guidance still lists them. Until the position is settled, confirm it close to departure rather than relying on it at the airport.
An Indian citizen living in Britain who wants certainty can take a standard tourist visa instead, with India entered as nationality and Britain as residence. Indian nationals who also hold a valid US visa, a US green card or EU residence are not affected by the change.
UK eVisa and BRP Holders Applying for a Dubai Visa
Physical BRP cards have been replaced by eVisas, and your UK status now lives online. For UAE purposes the card was never the deciding factor: the passport you travel on is. Make sure your UKVI account shows your current passport, because some residence-based routes ask for proof of UK status.
Holders of six Asian and African passports with a valid UK residence permit can use a separate route: a 14-day visa with one extension allowed, or a 60-day visa with none. British Families Travelling With a Pakistani or Indian Spouse
Mixed-nationality households are common in the UK, and each person's entry is decided separately. A British parent and British-passport children receive the free visa on arrival, while a spouse on a Pakistani or Indian passport needs their own arrangement. Apply for that spouse well before the family's flight, and book all tickets in the names and passport numbers that will be shown in Dubai.
Dual British-Pakistani Nationals
Pakistan allows dual nationality with the UK, so many British Pakistanis hold both passports. Travelling on the British one means no UAE application at all. Use that passport from booking through to arrival. India does not permit dual citizenship, so British citizens of Indian origin, including OCI cardholders, simply travel on their British passport.
Tracking a UK Resident's Dubai Visa Application
After payment, an application ID is emailed to you. The Dubai visa status tool shows the progress of the file, and once approved, the e-visa lands in your email ready to print or keep on your phone. A consultant checks every file before it is submitted, so a blurred passport scan or unsuitable photo can be fixed before it causes a delay. Relatives travelling together can share a single application if you add them before paying.
