UAE Visa Cancellation Status Guide · Updated 4 August 2026

Privacy note: Never enter passport, Emirates ID, or file details into any site other than the official ICP or GDRFA channels. This page explains how the check works — it does not collect or display anyone's visa data.

A visa cancellation status check in the UAE is done through the visa or residence-file enquiry linked to whichever authority and emirate issued the residence visa — ICP Smart Services for every emirate except Dubai, or GDRFA Dubai for Dubai-issued files. Depending on the record, the check needs a passport number, nationality, date of birth, visa number, residence file number, UID, Emirates ID, or a cancellation transaction reference — passport number alone does not always return a result.

Three things cause most failed checks: using ICP for a Dubai-issued file (or GDRFA for a non-Dubai file), confusing work-permit cancellation with residence cancellation — they are two separate records, and closing one does not confirm the other — and treating a submitted cancellation request as a finished one. A request receipt confirms submission; the portal showing "Cancelled" confirms completion.

This guide covers checking cancellation status, residence-file validity, grace periods, and cancellation fees, verified against ICP and GDRFA's own published service pages. For the full step-by-step cancellation process and required documents, see our complete visa cancellation process guide. If you're checking a tourist or visit visa's day-to-day status rather than a residence-file cancellation, our visitor visa status by passport number guide covers that separately.

Quick Answer

Visa Cancellation Status Check UAE — Quick Answer

Check your UAE visa cancellation status through ICP Smart Services (Public Services → File Validity) if your visa was issued outside Dubai, or GDRFA Dubai (Services → Residency Services → File Status Inquiry) if it was Dubai-issued. UAE Pass gives the fastest route if you already have an account. Once a residence visa is confirmed cancelled, ICP's published grace-period rules give you 30 days for most standard categories, 60 days if the permit was issued with a guarantor or host, 90 days for skilled workers (levels 1–3) and property owners, and 180 days for Golden, Green, and Blue Visa holders, their families, widows/divorcees of residents, and students who've completed their studies. Miss the window and a flat AED 50 per day overstay fine applies. Work-permit cancellation and residence cancellation are separate records — one closing does not confirm the other — and a submitted cancellation request is not the same as a completed one.

Grace Period After UAE Visa Cancellation, by Category

ICP publishes four grace-period tiers on its own "Cancellation of residency permits" service page. This is the federal framework; GDRFA Dubai administers cancellations for Dubai-issued files under the same underlying policy.

Grace Period Who It Applies To
180 days Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders and their family members; widows or divorced women of residents; students after completing their studies; foreign-passport holders who are relatives of UAE nationals
90 days Skilled workers in occupational levels 1–3, and property owners
60 days Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host
30 days All other categories not listed above
No grace period Tourist and pre-arranged visit visas — the fine clock starts the day after expiry, with no buffer

Source: ICP "Cancellation of residency permits" service page, icp.gov.ae, last updated by ICP on 02/08/2026. Occupational skill level is set by MOHRE at the point your work permit was issued — it isn't something you self-select, so confirm your own tier on the ICP or GDRFA portal rather than assuming from job title alone.

Status Checking Steps

How to Check UAE Visa Cancellation Status

  1. Identify which emirate issued the residence visa or entry permit.
  2. Confirm whether the file is handled through ICP, GDRFA Dubai, a free-zone channel, or another authorised route.
  3. Keep the passport that was linked to the old residence visa ready — not a newly renewed one, unless the enquiry supports both.
  4. Collect any available visa number, residence file number, UID, Emirates ID, or transaction reference.
  5. Open the relevant visa or residence-file enquiry for that authority, or log in through UAE Pass if you have an account.
  6. Select the file-validity, visa-status, or cancellation-status option that matches your case — on ICP Smart Services this sits under Public Services → File Validity; on GDRFA Dubai it sits under Services → Residency Services → File Status Inquiry.
  7. Enter the requested identity and file details exactly as they appear on your documents.
  8. Complete any security or CAPTCHA verification requested.
  9. Review whether the file shows as active, under cancellation, expired, inactive, cancelled, or revoked.
  10. Check whether a cancellation date or a completed transaction appears on the record.
  11. Save or download cancellation confirmation if it's offered.
  12. For employment-sponsored visas, check the MOHRE work-permit record separately.
  13. Contact your sponsor or the relevant authority if the result is unclear or doesn't match what you expected.

Menu labels reflect the portals' wording at the time of writing and can change without notice — confirm the live wording on the portal itself before relying on it.

Passport Number Enquiry

How to Check UAE Visa Cancellation Status With Passport Number

Passport number is often the starting point for a cancellation-status check, and in some enquiries it can be enough on its own — but many routes also ask for nationality, date of birth, passport expiry date, or a file/visa number alongside it. A few practical points:

  • Always use the passport that the original residence visa was issued against — if you've renewed your passport since, try the old passport number first.
  • Enter the passport number exactly as printed, including letters, with no extra spaces.
  • On ICP Smart Services, the passport expiry date is a required field — leaving it out is the most common cause of a "no record found" result.
  • Nationality and date of birth must match immigration records exactly, including any name-order differences on older passports.
  • A passport-number result may confirm visa or file validity without listing every cancellation transaction in detail.
  • No result does not automatically mean the visa is active or cancelled — it can also mean a details mismatch or the wrong enquiry route.

Quick checklist before you search: old passport number confirmed → passport expiry date ready → nationality matches passport → date of birth ready → correct authority selected (ICP or GDRFA) based on issuing emirate.

Alternative Checking Methods

Checking Cancellation Status via UAE Pass and Mobile Apps

UAE Pass is the government's unified digital identity platform. If you already have an account linked to your Emirates ID, it can display your residency file and visa status directly, without re-entering passport, nationality, and date-of-birth details each time. This is worth setting up if you expect to check status more than once during a job change or exit process.

App Covers Login
GDRFA Dubai app Dubai-issued visas only Passport details work without an account; UAE Pass optional
UAEICP app All emirates except Dubai Emirates ID, passport, or UAE Pass
DubaiNow Dubai visa records plus outstanding fines in one view UAE Pass or Emirates ID login

Download only from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and confirm the publisher name matches the official authority before logging in — a general rule for any government-linked app. If you don't yet have a UAE Pass account, you can register with your Emirates ID and a valid phone number directly through the UAE Pass app or website.

Required Information

Details Required for a Cancellation Status Check

The exact fields requested vary by enquiry route, but commonly include some combination of:

  • Passport number (and old passport number, if renewed)
  • Passport expiry date
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Visa or entry permit number
  • Residence file number
  • UID / unified number
  • Emirates ID number
  • Sponsor or company details
  • Cancellation transaction or application reference

Privacy reminder: only enter these details on the official ICP or GDRFA channel for your emirate. Never share them with unofficial "checker" websites or agents claiming instant results.

Federal Visa Files

ICP Smart Services Visa Cancellation Status

ICP Smart Services — run by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security — covers residence and visa files issued through the federal system: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain. A Dubai-issued file will not appear here.

The path is Public Services → File Validity, then a choice between searching by file number or by passport information, then a choice between "Residency" and "Visa" as the record type. Cancellation processing through ICP is stated at 2 working days on ICP's own service page. A completed work-permit cancellation through MOHRE does not automatically appear as residence cancellation in the same lookup — they're separate systems. As with any government portal, verify the live service directly before relying on exact steps, since interfaces are updated periodically.

Dubai-Issued Visa Files

GDRFA Visa Cancellation Status

GDRFA Dubai — the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs — is the relevant authority for Dubai-issued residence files and entry permits. A "GDRFA visa cancellation" search can mean several different things: the cancellation process itself, a submitted transaction's status, or the residence file's current status. This section focuses on the last two.

The path is Services → Residency Services → File Status Inquiry, where you can search by visa file number or passport number. For sponsor-initiated cancellations, an Amer service centre or the sponsor's own account may hold the transaction record even if the public file-status lookup doesn't show every detail. A Dubai-issued file should be checked through the Dubai-specific route rather than a non-Dubai channel.

Authority Comparison

ICP vs GDRFA for Visa Cancellation Status

Factor ICP-Related Route GDRFA Dubai Route
General relevance Federal or non-Dubai visa files Dubai-issued residence and visa files
Typical menu path Public Services → File Validity Services → Residency Services → File Status Inquiry
In-country cancellation fee AED 150 typical online total AED 190 individual / AED 225 company
Covers work permit? No — that's MOHRE No — that's MOHRE

Important warning Don't assume every UAE file appears here Don't use for files issued outside Dubai
Residence File Status

UAE Residence Visa Cancellation Status

Residence cancellation closes or changes the immigration residence file itself — a different event from resignation, and a different record from work-permit cancellation. Look for clear cancellation confirmation or a cancellation date rather than assuming based on general wording. An expired file is not automatically the same as a formally cancelled one, and a historical record can remain visible in the system even after cancellation is complete. For background on how residence visas work before cancellation becomes relevant, see our Dubai residence visa guide.

File Validity Results

UAE Residence File Validity Check

Residence-file results generally fall into a few broad categories, though live systems may word them differently:

  • Active — the file currently shows as valid
  • Under cancellation — a cancellation request has been submitted but not yet processed; wait for a confirmed "Cancelled" status before making exit or transfer decisions
  • Expired — validity has ended, which is not automatically the same as formal cancellation
  • Cancelled — the file shows a completed, standard cancellation
  • Revoked — an authority-initiated cancellation, typically tied to an overstay, an absconding report, or another violation, and sometimes accompanied by an entry ban
  • Inactive / closed — the file is not currently active, for reasons that may need confirming separately

Confirming current validity matters most before submitting any new visa application, since an unresolved old file is one of the more common causes of delay.

Cancellation Evidence

How to Check if My Visa Is Cancelled in UAE

Reasonable evidence that a residence visa has actually been cancelled includes:

  • The residence file itself displays a cancelled status
  • A cancellation date appears on the record
  • A completed cancellation transaction is shown, not just a submitted one
  • A cancellation certificate has been issued
  • Your sponsor has provided the completed cancellation document
  • The MOHRE work-permit record is also closed, where relevant

What does not, on its own, confirm cancellation: resignation, leaving the UAE, work-permit cancellation alone, visa expiry alone, or a verbal or email confirmation from an employer.

Why Status Sometimes Gets Stuck

MOHRE + GDRFA/ICP: the Two-Step Cancellation Process

For most mainland employment visas, residence cancellation is a two-step process, and both steps have to complete before your file shows as fully cancelled:

  1. MOHRE: the employer cancels the labour contract and work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Until this step completes, the residence file typically still shows active or unchanged.
  2. GDRFA or ICP: once MOHRE confirms the labour cancellation, the employer submits the residence visa cancellation to GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates). The file then moves to "Under Cancellation" and, once processed, to "Cancelled."

If your status has shown "Under Cancellation" for several days, this two-step gap is the most common reason. Ask your HR or PRO specifically whether the MOHRE labour cancellation has been submitted and confirmed to GDRFA/ICP — not just whether "the cancellation" has been started. This sequence doesn't apply to every visa type: investor and freelancer permits are typically cancelled directly with the relevant authority, and family/dependent visas follow the primary sponsor's cancellation rather than a MOHRE step.

Record What It Confirms What It Doesn't Automatically Confirm
MOHRE work-permit cancellation Employment authorisation is closed The residence file is cancelled
GDRFA/ICP residence cancellation Immigration residence status is cancelled Employment dues or disputes are resolved
Employer email Employer states action was taken The authority's record is actually updated
Transaction receipt A request was submitted Cancellation is completed

For how work-permit and residence sponsorship connect in the first place, see our Dubai employment visa guide.

Online Status Enquiry

UAE Visa Cancellation Check Online

Whether a cancellation-status check is available online depends on the visa category, issuing emirate, sponsor type, and specific service used. Employees don't always have the same account access as their sponsor's corporate account, so a public enquiry may show file validity while the completed transaction record sits with the sponsor. Use the identifier that matches the enquiry you've chosen, save any reference numbers and confirmation you receive, and avoid unofficial websites that claim universal or instant government access — no third party has direct access to ICP or GDRFA databases.

Cancellation Confirmation

Visa Cancellation Confirmation UAE

"Cancellation confirmation" can mean different things depending on where you are in the process, and it's worth keeping these apart:

  • Submission confirmation — the request was received
  • Processing confirmation — the request is under review
  • Completed cancellation confirmation — the cancellation has actually gone through
  • Updated residence-file status — the file itself now reflects cancellation
  • Cancellation certificate — a formal document you can retain and present later

Retain whichever of these you receive, especially the final one — it's typically the document requested when applying for a new visa or resolving a dispute later.

Formal Cancellation Proof

Residence Visa Cancellation Certificate UAE

A cancellation certificate is the formal document confirming that a residence visa cancellation has been completed, issued through whichever authority processed the request. What it contains can vary by route, but it's worth retaining because it's often the proof requested during a new visa application, an audit of your immigration history, or a dispute with a previous sponsor. Redact passport, UID, and Emirates ID numbers before sharing a copy of any certificate outside official channels — there's no single universal template across all cases.

Verified Against ICP & GDRFA

What Does UAE Visa Cancellation Cost?

Fees differ by authority. Both are published directly on the relevant government service page as of this writing.

Authority Fee Applies To
ICP (non-Dubai) AED 50 application fee + AED 100 Smart Services fee (AED 150 typical online total) Standard residence cancellation
ICP (non-Dubai) + AED 100 exceptional cancellation fee Cancellation based on exceptional circumstances, e.g. a dispute or the guarantor's death
GDRFA (Dubai) AED 190 (individual) / AED 225 (company), plus Amer Centre fees Cancellation while the visa holder is inside the UAE
GDRFA (Dubai) AED 290 (individual) / AED 325 (company), plus Amer Centre fees Cancellation while the visa holder is outside the UAE

These figures cover the government cancellation fee itself, not MOHRE work-permit cancellation (typically processed free of charge through MOHRE's own channels for standard employment cases), typing-centre service charges, or any outstanding fines on the file. For the complete step-by-step process, full document checklist, and every fee scenario, see our complete visa cancellation process guide. Government fees are subject to change — confirm the current amount on the ICP or GDRFA portal before paying.

Overstay Fine

Visa Cancellation Date Check & the Overstay Fine

The cancellation date should come from your completed record or certificate — not from your resignation date, last working day, termination date, or the date you left the UAE. This date is what starts your grace-period clock (see the table above for your applicable window).

If the grace period lapses without the visa holder exiting, transferring sponsorship, or otherwise regularising status, a flat AED 50 per day overstay fine applies, in effect UAE-wide since 11 February 2026 when ICP and GDRFA unified what had previously been a patchwork of rates that varied by emirate and visa category. Tourist and pre-arranged visit visas carry no grace period at all — the fine begins the day after expiry. See our overstay fine guidance for exit-permit fees and how to settle an outstanding balance.

Status Result Guide

What Do Visa Cancellation Status Results Mean?

Status Example General Meaning Next Step
Active Residence file may remain valid Confirm whether cancellation was actually submitted
Under cancellation Request initiated but not yet processed — often the MOHRE step not yet confirmed to GDRFA/ICP Recheck in 24–48 hours; don't exit or transfer yet
Cancelled File appears formally cancelled Save the proof and note your grace-period end date
Revoked Authority-initiated cancellation, often tied to a violation and sometimes an entry ban Get advice before assuming you can re-enter or reapply
Expired Visa validity has ended Confirm whether formal cancellation is still required
Inactive File is not currently active Confirm the exact reason with the authority or sponsor
No record found Search didn't match a record Recheck details and the authority selected

Live systems may use different exact wording than shown above — treat this as a general guide, not a literal screen-by-screen match.

Active Status Issues

Why Does My Visa Still Show Active?

Possible reasons — none confirmed without checking your specific file — include:

  • Only the MOHRE work permit was cancelled, not the residence file
  • Residence cancellation was never actually submitted to GDRFA/ICP
  • Your sponsor hasn't completed the final step
  • The request is genuinely still pending (usually within ICP's stated 2-day processing window)
  • Additional documents are required before it can proceed
  • Incorrect passport details were used in the search
  • The wrong enquiry route was selected for the issuing emirate
  • An old and new passport mismatch
  • The transaction was returned or rejected
  • A technical update delay on the portal
Missing Search Record

What If No Cancellation Record Is Found?

A "no record found" result does not confirm either an active or a cancelled status. Common causes include an incorrect passport number, nationality, or date of birth; using a new passport instead of the one linked to the old visa; a missing passport expiry date on the ICP portal; the wrong UID or file number; the wrong issuing authority selected; a recent cancellation that hasn't updated yet; or a temporary technical issue with the portal. Recheck your details and the authority selected before assuming either outcome.

Outside-UAE Status

Cancellation Status While Outside the UAE

Some visa files can be cancelled while the holder is outside the UAE, but simply remaining outside the country is not itself proof of formal cancellation — sponsor action is often still required to close the file. GDRFA Dubai lists a higher fee for outside-country cancellation than for cancellation from inside the UAE (see the fees table above). Check the actual residence-file record using the passport linked to the old visa, and request cancellation confirmation through the relevant authority rather than assuming time abroad has resolved it automatically.

Employer Status Dispute

Employer Says Visa Is Cancelled but Status Is Active

  1. Ask for the cancellation transaction number, not just a verbal confirmation.
  2. Request the residence cancellation document itself.
  3. Confirm whether only the MOHRE work permit — not the residence visa — was cancelled.
  4. Recheck your passport and file details in case of a search error.
  5. Confirm you're checking through the correct issuing authority.
  6. Ask specifically whether both the MOHRE and GDRFA/ICP steps are done, not just "the cancellation."
  7. Use the relevant employment or immigration support channel if the gap continues.
  8. Keep your resignation, termination, and settlement records on file.
  9. Use a formal complaint or legal channel for a genuine, unresolved dispute — see our guide to employment-related visa and labor issues for next steps.
New Visa Application

Can I Apply for a New Visa After Cancellation?

Before applying for a new UAE visa, confirm the old residence file shows as cancelled or properly closed, and check the MOHRE work-permit record separately for employment cases. Keep your cancellation certificate on hand, and check for any unresolved fines against the old file. A completed cancellation does not guarantee a new visa will be approved — approval remains case-specific and depends on the new application's own merits. If a previous rejection was linked to an old, unclosed file, our guide on Dubai visa rejection reasons covers how that shows up and how to resolve it before reapplying.

Mistakes to Avoid

Common Cancellation Status Check Mistakes

  • Checking only the MOHRE work permit and assuming it covers residence status too
  • Using the wrong emirate's authority for the file in question
  • Searching with a new passport instead of the one the visa was issued against
  • Leaving the passport expiry date blank on the ICP portal
  • Treating expiry as the same thing as formal cancellation
  • Treating an employer's email as final proof
  • Checking immediately after submission, before ICP's stated processing window has passed
  • Losing the transaction or application reference number
  • Confusing a new visa application's status with a cancellation's status
  • Sharing passport or Emirates ID details with unverified agents
  • Applying for a new visa before confirming the old file is closed
  • Assuming ICP and GDRFA records are interchangeable
  • Assuming a flat 30-day grace period applies to everyone, when your category may qualify for 60, 90, or 180 days
  • Not trying UAE Pass or the official apps, which can be faster than re-entering passport details each time
Protect Your Information

  • Use only the correct, official enquiry route for your issuing authority, or the official UAE Pass / GDRFA / UAEICP / DubaiNow apps
  • Don't pay anyone claiming they can instantly change a government status
  • Save official transaction and cancellation records somewhere secure
  • Double-check the website domain before entering any identity details
Visa Support

How Dubai Visitor Visa Can Help

We can help you understand which information is likely needed for your specific case, explain the difference between cancellation, expiry, and inactivity in plain language, review a cancellation document you've already received, and support you in preparing a new tourist or visit visa application once cancellation is confirmed. We do not have direct access to ICP or GDRFA databases, cannot cancel a residence visa on your behalf, cannot compel an employer to act, and cannot guarantee a new visa will be approved — those decisions rest solely with UAE immigration authorities.
