Passport Features That Can Stop an Australian at UAE Immigration
With no visa issued beforehand, everything rests on the passport. The Australian Government's Smartraveller advice for the UAE flags several details that end in refusal:
- Emergency passports cannot be used to enter the UAE.
- A birth date printed with "XX" in place of a day or month, such as XX FEB 1980, leads to refusal of both entry and transit.
- A passport printed with a single name is turned away.
- An "X" in the sex field prevents entry and transit.
- Diplomatic and official passports do not use the arrival scheme; their holders arrange a visa before departure.
If one of these applies, sort out a standard passport, or the right visa, before booking flights. Problems like these are hard to fix once you reach the airport. Children need their own Australian passports, and each is checked against the same rules.
Renewing an Australian Passport Ahead of a Dubai Trip
The six-month rule catches travellers whose passports look valid but expire soon after the holiday. Count six months forward from the day you land in Dubai, not the day you leave Australia. If the passport falls short, apply for a renewal early rather than relying on an emergency document, which the UAE will not accept.
A renewed passport causes no complications with an arrival visa, since no visa exists before you land. Just make sure the airline booking carries the new passport details and that you travel with the new book, not the cancelled one.
How Australians Use the 90-Day Total Across Several Trips
Repeat entry does not reset the clock. Every day spent inside the country across the visa's six-month life comes out of a single 90-day pool. Picture a Brisbane family who spend 35 days in Dubai over the Christmas holidays, then return for 30 days at Easter: they have used 65 days and have 25 left on that visa.
Anyone with children or parents living in the UAE, and likely to visit often, should keep a simple log of entry and exit dates. A quick trip out of the country does not refresh the allowance, and buying a tourist visa is not a way around one that has been used up.
Australian Residents on Indian or Filipino Passports
Living in Australia is not the same as holding an Australian passport, and the UAE decides entry by the passport you use. Australian residence does open doors for some nationalities, though:

Australian permanent residents from other countries usually need a visa approved in advance. Flying From Australia to Dubai
Emirates flies nonstop from several Australian cities, with Sydney to Dubai taking about fourteen and a half hours and Perth to Dubai just under eleven. Dubai sits six hours behind Sydney during Australian Eastern Standard Time, seven hours behind when New South Wales is on daylight saving, and four hours behind Perth all year.
Check the local arrival date on your ticket, because your 90 days start from the day you land. Keep your return or onward booking and your hotel or host's address on your phone, as the officer at the desk may ask how long you intend to stay.
Arriving in the UAE on an Australian Passport
At passport control you hand over the passport, the officer issues the visit visa, and you walk through to baggage. Flying into Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai works exactly the same way, because the arrival visa is a UAE visa valid in every emirate. Keep the details of where you are staying and your onward flight easy to reach, as officers can ask about both, and entry always remains at their discretion.
Dubai Stopovers for Australians Heading to Europe
Plenty of Australians break the long haul to Europe in Dubai. Staying airside between connecting flights needs nothing. If you leave the airport for a night or a few days, the same free arrival visa is issued, and those days come out of the same 90-day pool if you stop again on the way home within six months. Australians Visiting Family Who Live in the UAE
Many Australians have a son, daughter or sibling working in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. A relative's UAE residence does not change your visitor status: you still arrive on the 90-day visa and must leave within it. Parents planning a long stay to help with a new baby, for instance, should map the dates against the 90 days before booking. A grandparent staying three months uses the whole allowance in one go, leaving no room for a return visit within the six months.
Staying with family rather than in a hotel is fine. Carry your host's address and phone number, and take a photo of their Emirates ID card in case you are asked who you are staying with.
Working, Studying or Doing Business in the UAE on an Australian Passport
The arrival visa is for visiting. Meetings, conferences and trade shows sit comfortably within it, but paid employment does not. Accepting a UAE role means the employer applies for an employment visa on your behalf, and a university place calls for a student visa arranged through the institution.
