Sri Lanka to Dubai: Visit Visa Essentials for Sri Lankans

Travellers on a Sri Lankan passport cannot obtain a visa in Dubai's arrival halls, so the Dubai visa for Sri Lankan citizens has to be approved by email before the drive to Katunayake airport. Most holidaymakers and family visitors choose a one-month tourist permit, and our Dubai visit visa from Sri Lanka guide explains fees, timelines and the form in detail.

Dubai Visa Rules for Sri Lankan Passport Holders

Sri Lanka appears as a visa-required country on the UAE foreign ministry's list of visa exemptions, which makes an advance e-visa the first of the Dubai visa requirements for Sri Lankan citizens. An American green card, UK residence or a Schengen visa changes nothing, because the residence-linked arrival visas offered to Indians and six other nationalities do not cover Sri Lankans. Maldivians, by contrast, enter visa-free.

Choosing a Dubai Tourist Visa as a Sri Lankan Traveller

Stay length and side trips shape which Dubai tourist visa for Sri Lankan visitors should pick:

All of these are a Dubai visit visa emailed as a PDF, and the same approval works for landing in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi.

Documents Sri Lankan Applicants Need

Five uploads complete every Dubai visa for Sri Lankan passport file:

  • The passport's biographical page, scanned in colour with all four corners showing, from a booklet not due to expire within six months of landing.
  • A current headshot against plain white that meets the size and background rules for Dubai visa photos.
  • Your return or onward air ticket.
  • A hotel confirmation, or the tenancy address and Emirates ID of whoever hosts you.
  • Medical cover accepted by Emirates hospitals, as our notes on visitor medical cover explain.

Names need care too. Sinhala names often begin with a long ancestral family name such as Herath Mudiyanselage, while Tamil names usually carry the father's name. Reproduce each name precisely as the passport's machine-readable strip shows it, and submit one application per child.

Renewing a Sri Lankan Passport

Ordinary Sri Lankan passports issued to adults last ten years. Inside the country they come from the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla or its regional offices. Sri Lankans living in the Emirates lodge renewals in person at the Abu Dhabi embassy or the Dubai consulate and should allow about three months. Replace a passport nearing its final six months before applying, since approvals are tied to its number.

Sri Lankan Applications: Fees, Cards and Processing Time

Fees are billed in US dollars, so make sure your Sri Lankan card allows international transactions. Each visa card quotes a Dubai visa processing time capped at four working days, but submit about a fortnight before flying. Our application status checker shows progress, and the approved Dubai e-visa should be saved on your phone and printed. For last-minute trips, the express processing option can help eligible applicants.

Departure Checks at Katunayake for Sri Lankan Travellers

Getting a Dubai visa for Sri Lankans approved is only the first hurdle. A safe-migration unit set up at Bandaranaike International, staffed by immigration, foreign employment bureau and police intelligence officers, has questioned departing visit visa holders bound for the Gulf to curb trafficking and illegal recruitment. Answer honestly and carry your return ticket, accommodation or host details and enough funds for the stay. Whether a separate pre-boarding clearance applies depends on the carrier, as our OK to Board explainer describes. Sri Lanka Customs requires a declaration when departing travellers carry foreign currency worth more than USD 10,000.

Flights From Sri Lanka to Dubai

Nearly every trip starts at Bandaranaike International in Katunayake, north of Colombo. Emirates operates three nonstop flights daily plus one routed through Malé, SriLankan Airlines flies at least daily and flydubai several times a day, while FitsAir, a private Sri Lankan carrier, has paused its Dubai route, so check its status first. Air Arabia serves Sharjah and Etihad serves Abu Dhabi, both reachable on the same visa. The westbound journey lasts roughly four and a half to five hours. Regional conflict has halted some Gulf services from Colombo for days and others for months, so turn on airline notifications.

Time Difference Between Sri Lanka and Dubai

Colombo keeps UTC+5:30 all year and Dubai keeps UTC+4, so Dubai is 90 minutes behind Sri Lanka. A five-hour flight departing Katunayake at noon lands at about 3.30pm in Dubai. That landing date must sit inside the entry window shown on the approval.

Seasonal Dubai Travel From Sri Lanka

Dubai is most comfortable between November and March, a window that includes the December school holidays and the Dubai Shopping Festival, when fares out of Colombo rise. Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April brings another rush of families visiting relatives in the Emirates, so secure the Dubai tourist visa and seats early for either period. June to September is fiercely hot, often above 40°C, and better suited to malls than dunes.

Sri Lankan Business Travel to Dubai

Exporters of tea, spices, coconut products and garments meet Gulf buyers in Dubai throughout the year, and Sri Lanka's national pavilion at Gulfood was recently its largest ever. Meetings, trade fairs and site inspections suit the business visa, whereas accepting a salaried post means the employer must first secure a work permit.

Sri Lankan Gems, Medicines and Dubai Customs

Gemstones from Ratnapura need attention at both airports. Sri Lanka Customs lets passengers take out only a reasonable amount of personal jewellery, and loose stones must carry authentication from the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. In Dubai, travellers must declare cash, jewellery or precious stones together exceeding AED 60,000. Pack prescription medicines in original boxes alongside the doctor's note, get prior approval from Emirates health regulators for controlled drugs, and read our list of goods Dubai airport prohibits before packing.

Sri Lankans in the United States, the UK and Japan

Sri Lankan passport holders living in America, Britain or Japan apply the same way, entering their current home country. Because Sri Lanka grants dual citizenship on application, many Sri Lankans in the US or UK hold a second passport, and the American or British one needs no visa organised in advance, as covered for US citizens and British travellers. Japan generally requires naturalised citizens to give up other nationalities, so former Sri Lankans who became Japanese travel on a visa-exempt Japanese passport.

Sri Lankan Families in Dubai Hosting Relatives

Roughly a quarter of a million Sri Lankans live in the Emirates, according to the consulate in Dubai, and many residents bring over parents, siblings or children for holidays. To sponsor first-degree relatives such as parents, a spouse or children, a resident needs a monthly salary of AED 4,000 or more, rising to AED 8,000 when the guest is a second- or third-degree relative. Spouses and children relocating for good require residence sponsorship, explained in our family visa rules for Dubai residents.

Work Offers and Sri Lankan Visitors

Tourist and visit status rules out salaried work entirely. Lawful employment starts with an employer-sponsored permit, described in our guide to work permits in the Emirates, plus registration with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment before leaving home; workers who find industrial or corporate jobs on their own must first have the contract certified at the Sri Lankan mission.

Extensions and Overstays for Sri Lankan Visitors

If your plans run longer, apply for a Dubai visa extension while the current permit is still valid; depending on the visa held, an extra month issued inside Dubai or a two-month renewal processed locally could suit. Overstayers are fined AED 50 for every additional day from the first, as our overstay fines explainer shows.

Sri Lankan Consulate in Dubai and Embassy in Abu Dhabi

Sri Lanka's consulate general is located off Al Mankhool Road in Dubai (+971 4 611 5555) and receives the public on weekday mornings, while the embassy is on Salam Street in Abu Dhabi (+971 2 631 6444). Both accept passport applications, and the consulate issues emergency travel documents in about five working days. Report a lost or stolen passport to Dubai Police first, then contact the consulate.
