Is a Visa Required for Americans Travelling to Dubai?
Not for a holiday, a family visit or a short business trip. The UAE Embassy in Washington's guidance for US citizens confirms entry on arrival for up to 90 days, used in one stay or several, within 180 days of the first entry. The embassy also asks for six months of passport validity beyond arrival and a return or onward ticket. A US citizen on a regular passport has no reason to buy a UAE e-visa for a standard trip.
Which Travellers on a US Trip to Dubai Need a UAE Visa
Many households in the United States include relatives on other passports, and UAE immigration looks only at the passport each person presents.

Take a typical case: a US-citizen parent, children born in the United States and an Indian spouse with a green card. The parent and children walk through on their US passports at no cost, while the spouse pays for an arrival visa at the immigration counter. Nobody in that family needs an advance application, which is why it pays to check each traveller before buying anything.
Indian Travellers With US Visas or Green Cards
Indian citizens holding a valid US visa, such as a B1/B2 or H-1B stamp, or a green card can receive an arrival visa when they land in the UAE. The short option is 14 days for AED 100, with one 14-day extension available for AED 250; the longer option is 60 days for AED 250. Six months must remain on the Indian passport, and keeping the US visa or green card valid well beyond the trip avoids questions at check-in. Carry the physical green card or the passport containing the US visa, because airline staff check it before issuing a boarding pass. Filipino and Other Green Card Holders on the Residence Route
The UAE has extended arrival visas to nationals of the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya and South Africa who hold residence permits from the United States and several other countries. For these travellers a green card qualifies, but a US visitor or student visa does not, which is the main difference from the Indian rule. US Green Card Holders Who Need a Dubai Visa Before Travel
Permanent residents from visa-required countries outside those two groups, such as Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh, apply online before flying. A trip of up to four weeks suits the 30-day UAE tourist visa, while a stay of up to two months calls for the UAE visa valid for 60 days. US Passport Checks Before Flying to Dubai
Read the State Department's current travel advisory for the UAE before booking, then check the passport itself:
- Six months of validity beyond your arrival date, and at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
- Limited-validity emergency passports issued abroad are not accepted for UAE entry, according to the State Department, so replace a lost passport with a regular one before the trip.
- The State Department also reports that passports with an X gender marker may not be accepted at UAE immigration.
- A US passport card is not a travel document for the UAE.
- Renewing online cancels the current passport as soon as the application is submitted, so avoid starting an online renewal in the weeks before a Dubai trip.
Dual Nationals Entering on a US Passport
Dual nationality is not recognised in the UAE, so you are treated only as a citizen of the passport you enter with. Americans who also hold another citizenship should enter and leave on the US passport to use the visa-free route, and book flights under that same passport.
Layovers in Dubai on a US Passport
Americans connecting through Dubai to Asia, Africa or the Indian Ocean need nothing for an airside transfer at Dubai International. Travellers who would rather see the city during a long connection simply pass immigration and are admitted under the same arrival entry, so a stopover of a night or two needs no transit visa. Those days count toward the 90-day allowance, which matters only for frequent visitors. Check that a stopover ticket shows the onward flight, as immigration officers may ask for it.
Medicines and Banned Items for Americans Flying to Dubai
Some medicines common in the United States, including certain ADHD stimulants, strong painkillers and sleeping pills, are controlled in the UAE. Controlled medicines need approval through the UAE's online medicine permit before travel, and every prescription medicine should travel with a copy of the prescription. Flights From US Cities to Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Nonstop Emirates services reach Dubai from New York JFK, Boston, Washington Dulles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, with Newark served via Athens. Etihad links several US airports with Abu Dhabi, and US citizens receive the same entry there, since UAE entry applies at every airport in the country. Most nonstop flights take around 12 to 16 hours.
Dubai Time Versus US Time Zones
Dubai stays on UTC+4 all year. New York is nine hours behind Dubai in the US winter and eight once daylight saving begins, while Los Angeles trails by twelve hours in winter and eleven in summer. Morning in Dubai is therefore the previous evening on the West Coast.
Business Meetings and Work for US Citizens in the UAE
Meetings, conferences and trade events fit visitor entry; paid work does not. Overstay Fines and Old UAE Cases for US Passport Holders
Days beyond the 90-day allowance are fined at AED 50 each, and because the allowance is non-renewable, extending inside the country is not normally an option for Americans. Returning to the United States From the UAE
Flights from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport to the US clear US immigration and customs before departure at the airport's preclearance facility, so you land in the US as a domestic arrival. Allow extra time for this step. From Dubai, US entry formalities happen on landing as usual. Declare any goods above your duty-free allowance and keep receipts for gold, watches or electronics bought in Dubai.
