An Abu Dhabi transit visa lets an eligible traveller enter the UAE during a connection through Zayed International Airport instead of remaining airside. The UAE currently offers two transit visa types: 48 hours and 96 hours. Both are single-entry and non-extendable.

If you qualify for visa-free entry or visa on arrival, you may not need a separate transit visa. If you stay airside and do not clear UAE immigration, you normally do not need an entry visa for the UAE, but your airline and ticket arrangement still matter.

What Is an Abu Dhabi Transit Visa?

The UAE Government lists two transit visa durations: 48 hours and 96 hours. The visa must be arranged before entry. It is for travellers who will continue to another destination after a short UAE stop.

The visa is not an “Abu Dhabi-only” immigration category. It is a UAE transit visa used by travellers entering through Abu Dhabi. Federal guidance says UAE-based airlines sponsor transit visas. A travel agency or airport hotel may also arrange one when that route is available.

Do You Need a Transit Visa at Abu Dhabi Airport?

You need to separate two situations: staying airside and entering the UAE.

• If you stay in the international transfer area and do not clear immigration, you normally do not need a UAE entry visa.
• If you want to leave the airport, you must have a right to enter the UAE. That can be visa-free entry, visa on arrival, a transit visa or another valid UAE visa.
• If your flights are on separate tickets, you may need to collect baggage and check in again. That can require you to enter the UAE.
• If your bags are checked through to the final destination, Zayed International Airport says you do not need to collect them in Abu Dhabi.

Some online guides repeat a “roughly 8-hour minimum” as if it were a visa rule. Current official UAE and Etihad transit-visa pages do not publish that as a general eligibility requirement, so do not use it as a fixed threshold.

Abu Dhabi Airport Transit and Connection Rules

Zayed International Airport uses one main terminal for its flights. Connecting passengers do not need to move between terminals. If you already have the next boarding pass, follow the transfer signs and flight displays after landing.

Etihad currently lists a minimum connection time of 45 minutes for most flights and 85 minutes for flights to the United States because of the additional pre-clearance process. Those are minimum connection times, not transit-visa eligibility rules.

If you do not have the onward boarding pass or you are unsure about baggage, use the transfer desk after security. Build extra time into any plan to leave the airport because immigration, transport and return security can take much longer than an airside connection.

Abu Dhabi 48-Hour Transit Visa

The Abu Dhabi 48-hour transit visa is the shorter option for a brief stopover. Etihad currently publishes a fee of AED 55 for its 48-hour transit visa service.

Etihad says the visa can be used for entry within 30 days. It allows one entry and cannot be extended. You need a confirmed ticket to Abu Dhabi and onward to a third destination, a passport valid for six months and a colour photo.

Choose the 48-hour option only if your actual stay fits inside that visa period. Do not select it simply because the layover starts on one day and ends on the next.

Abu Dhabi 96-Hour Transit Visa

The Abu Dhabi 96-hour transit visa is intended for a longer stopover of up to four days. Etihad currently publishes a fee of AED 216.

The same core rules apply. It is single-entry and non-extendable. You still need the onward ticket, passport and photo documents.

Etihad also says that if the transit time is more than 24 hours, you must have a confirmed hotel booking or provide the Emirates ID and UAE residence visa copy of the person you will stay with.

Abu Dhabi Transit Visa Requirements

Etihad lists the main documents for a transit visa. It may ask for extra documents in some cases.

• Passport valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel
• Completed visa application
• Colour photograph
• Passport copy
• Confirmed ticket to Abu Dhabi
• Confirmed onward ticket to a third destination
• Any extra supporting documents requested for the application

Etihad asks for application files in JPEG format and limits each uploaded document to 1MB. Its published photo size is 4.3 cm × 5.5 cm.

Applying for an Abu Dhabi Transit Visa Through Etihad

Etihad says its transit-visa service is for applications made with Etihad Airways. This does not mean Etihad is the only possible UAE sponsor. Federal guidance also recognises UAE-based airlines, travel agencies and airport hotels.

For an Etihad itinerary, the direct airline route is the clearest option. Check first whether you need a visa, then select the 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa, upload the required documents and pay the published fee.

If you are travelling on another airline, a codeshare or separate tickets, ask the operating carrier which entry-visa route applies before you pay anyone for a transit visa.

Abu Dhabi Transit Visa Cost and Processing Time

The current published Abu Dhabi transit visa cost through Etihad is AED 55 for 48 hours and AED 216 for 96 hours. These are Etihad's visa fees, not a promise that every third-party service will charge the same total.

Etihad says visas take around 4 business days to process. It also asks applicants to wait at least 5 days after submission before tracking progress. You need the application number and passport number to track the visa.

Visa application fees are non-refundable. Apply early enough that a delayed decision does not force you to cancel a non-refundable stopover booking.

Abu Dhabi Transit Visa for Indian Passport Holders

An Abu Dhabi transit visa for Indian passport holders is not always necessary. Some Indian ordinary-passport holders qualify for the UAE's 14-day entry visa route based on a valid visa, residence permit or Green Card from specified countries.

Current ICP guidance still includes qualifying documents from the United States, European Union and United Kingdom. It also includes residence permits from Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand. Transit Visa vs Etihad Abu Dhabi Stopover

The Etihad Stopover programme is not a visa. It is a hotel benefit for qualifying Etihad bookings. Current Etihad terms include complimentary hotel accommodation for one or two nights on the free stopover package, subject to the booking rules and hotel availability.

You still need permission to enter the UAE. That can be visa-free entry, visa on arrival or a pre-arranged transit or tourist visa. A free hotel offer does not create an immigration right.
