Fiji Passport to Dubai: Free Entry, Nadi Routes and Transit
A Fijian passport needs no paid visa for Dubai. Ordinary Fiji passports are given a free visit visa by the immigration officer on arrival, valid for six months with a combined limit of 90 days spent inside the UAE, and Fiji's embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes the same 90-day tourist allowance. For how those days are tallied over repeat visits, read our Fiji 90-day UAE entry explainer. What usually takes real effort is everything around the visa: the long route out of Nadi, the transit rules at the airport where you change planes, and arranging entry for any companion who carries a different passport.
Why Fiji Passports Skip the UAE Visa Application
Fiji appears as a visa-free nationality in the exemptions register kept by the UAE's foreign ministry, and airlines serving Dubai group Fiji with Australia and New Zealand in their 90-day arrival list. There is no online form, nothing to print in advance and no charge for the entry stamp. If a website offers a Fijian citizen a paid one-month or two-month tourist visa for an ordinary holiday, that purchase adds cost and nothing else.
Two conditions remain. Your Fijian passport should not expire within half a year of your landing day, and admission is always the arrival officer's decision, so have your onward or return ticket and your hotel or host details ready on your phone.
Getting From Nadi to Dubai: Connections and Transit Rules on the Way
Fiji and the UAE have no direct air link, so you will change planes at least once. The shortest overall journey usually pairs Fiji Airways from Nadi to Singapore, about ten and a half hours, with Emirates or Singapore Airlines to Dubai in roughly seven and a half. Plan on about 18 hours in total via Singapore, and more via Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland or Hong Kong.
The UAE's rules only start at the UAE border. The country you connect through applies its own rules to a Fijian passport:
| Connecting through | What a Fijian passport holder needs |
|---|---|
| An Australian airport | Nothing extra if the onward flight leaves within 8 hours and you stay in the transit lounge; otherwise an Australian transit visa |
| Auckland | An NZeTA in place of a transit visa, applied for online before travel |
| Wellington or Christchurch on Fiji Airways | A New Zealand visitor visa, because those airports have no transit facilities |
| Singapore | No visa for Fijian passport holders |
One trap deserves attention. If your two flights sit on separate bookings, you may have to collect your bags and pass through immigration at the connecting airport, and the airside exemptions above stop applying. Book a single through-ticket where possible, and confirm the connecting country's own rules on its immigration website before paying, since they change independently of the UAE.
Fiji Time Versus Dubai Time
Fiji stays on UTC+12 throughout the year and the UAE on UTC+4, which puts Dubai eight hours behind Suva and Nadi. Because the journey runs westward against the clock, many travellers land on the same calendar date they left Fiji. That landing date is day one of your 90-day allowance.
Dubai Customs Rules for Travellers Arriving From Fiji
Cash or travellers' cheques worth more than AED 60,000 must be declared to UAE customs when you land, while smaller amounts need no paperwork. Some prescription medicines, including certain strong painkillers and sleeping tablets, are controlled in the UAE, so compare your prescriptions with the Ministry of Health and Prevention's list and pack the doctor's letter with them. Planning to bring yaqona as a gift for Fijian friends in Dubai? Ask UAE customs how it is treated before you pack it, as we cannot confirm that for you.
Fijians Living in Australia or New Zealand
Large Fijian communities are settled in Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland and beyond, and the UAE treats their passports exactly as it does at home: the free 90-day arrival visa applies whatever country you live in. Departing from there is also easier, as Emirates runs nonstop services to Dubai from Brisbane and Sydney, and from Auckland in a little over 17 hours.
Because Fiji permits dual citizenship, many families also hold Australian or New Zealand passports, and holders of those passports are also admitted free of charge for up to 90 days. For a short holiday either document works. Pick one, put its name and number on the airline booking, and present that same passport on arrival and departure. More on those documents is in our pages for Australians entering the UAE and New Zealand passport holders.
Which Travellers in a Fiji Household Still Need a UAE Visa
The exemption attaches to a Fijian passport, never to a Fiji address. Residents of Fiji who hold another country's passport follow that country's UAE rule. Children receive the same free entry as adults, provided each child travels on a Fijian passport of their own.
| Traveller | UAE entry route |
|---|---|
| Fiji citizen on a Fiji passport | Free 90-day visit visa at the airport |
| Fijian dual national on an Australian or New Zealand passport | Free 90-day visit visa at the airport |
| Indian citizen living in Fiji | Visa approved before travel, for example a one-month tourist visa with a single entry |
| Indian citizen holding Australian or New Zealand residence | Possibly a 14-day arrival visa; see our rules for Indian passport holders |
| Any other nationality | The rule for that passport, which may require a visa in advance |
A non-Fijian relative joining a long family stay is often better served by a two-month visa with one entry. Their file is short, mainly a passport scan, a photograph and flight plans, as listed in our UAE tourist visa document list. After payment, progress appears on the visa status tracker, and the issued visa reaches them by email.
Flying to Dubai for the Sevens or Business as a Fijian Fan or Professional
The Emirates Dubai 7s at The Sevens Stadium has opened recent world sevens seasons in late November or early December, and the Fiji team draws a loyal travelling crowd. Supporters on Fiji passports need nothing beyond the free arrival visa. Hotels and flights fill quickly that week, so lock in accommodation early, and keep the days in Dubai in mind if you are planning another UAE trip within six months.
The same visitor entry covers meetings, exhibitions and conferences. Bring the invitation letter or your event registration, since officers can ask why you are visiting.
Fijians Working in the UAE and Visiting Family There
Visitor status, however generous, never covers paid employment. A job in Dubai or Abu Dhabi begins with the employer securing your employment permit and residency, as described in our walkthrough of UAE employment permits. Taking up work on visitor status risks fines and trouble on later trips. UAE labour rules place recruitment and permit costs on the employer, so treat any agent asking a Fijian jobseeker for a placement fee with suspicion.
Fijian residents of the UAE whose relatives in Suva or Lautoka hold Fiji passports have an easy time: those relatives simply book flights. A spouse or child who will live in the UAE needs residence sponsorship instead, covered in our note on UAE family residence rules.
Fiji Embassy Services in Abu Dhabi
Fijians already in the UAE can renew or replace passports at the Fiji Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which also processes dual citizenship applications and registers births, deaths and marriages. The embassy asks visitors to book an appointment before coming in. Start a renewal well ahead of the six-month mark, because a passport close to expiry complicates both a UAE residence visa and the next flight home.
Long Stays and Overstay Fines for Fijian Visitors
If a visit might run beyond 90 days, sort it out before you fly rather than after you land. Any extra time depends on the status UAE immigration recorded when you entered, so raise long family stays with us early. Staying past the permitted date triggers an AED 50 fine for each extra day, charged from the first one, payable before you can leave. Our UAE overstay penalties explainer covers how a fine is looked up.
Dubai Entry Fees for Fiji Passport Holders
Nothing for a Fijian passport on an ordinary visit. Budget instead for flights, accommodation and daily spending in UAE dirhams, and check before departure that your Fijian bank card is enabled for overseas use. A cost arises only when a companion travels on a passport that needs a visa, and that price is displayed on the relevant visa card.
When a Fiji-Based Traveller Should Contact Dubai Visitor Visa
Most Fijians will not need us. Get in touch if a member of your party carries another nationality, if the stay could pass 90 days, if you travel on a diplomatic, official or emergency document, or if an earlier UAE visit left an unpaid fine. Ask our visa specialists, listing each traveller's passport and travel dates. WhatsApp is monitored day and night, useful when Dubai runs eight hours behind Fiji.
