Dubai for New Zealand Passport Holders: Free Arrival Visa
New Zealand citizens have nothing to arrange before flying to Dubai. Immigration officers issue a visit visa free of charge when you land, and it covers repeat trips as well as a single holiday. What can still cause trouble is the passport itself, the length of a long stay, or a travel companion whose passport is treated differently. If someone in your group holds another nationality, our UAE entry checker by nationality shows whether they need approval first.
What the UAE Arrival Visa Gives New Zealand Passport Holders
According to the UAE Embassy in Wellington, New Zealanders are granted a visit visa on arrival that permits several entries and up to 90 days within a 180-day period counted from the date of first entry. There is no form, no fee and no email to wait for. The visa covers every emirate, so landing in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah instead of Dubai changes nothing; our note on entering through any UAE airport explains why.
It is a visitor status. Holidays, family visits, meetings and conferences fit within it; a paid job does not. Airlines check New Zealand passports against the same rules at check-in, so a passport problem usually surfaces in Auckland rather than in Dubai.
Checking a New Zealand Passport Before a Dubai Trip
On arrival day, at least half a year must still remain before your passport expires. Renewals through the Department of Internal Affairs take time, so check the expiry date when you start planning, not at the airport. New Zealand's SafeTravel service warns that a passport showing "X" in the gender field cannot be used to enter or transit the UAE, so anyone in that position needs advice before booking, including for a connection through Dubai.
Every child needs a New Zealand passport of their own. Immigration grants each family member a separate arrival visa, checked against that person's document.
Counting the 90 Days on Repeat Visits From New Zealand
The 180-day window opens on the day of your first arrival, and every day spent inside the UAE during that window comes out of one 90-day allowance. Leaving for a weekend in a neighbouring country does not reset anything. A Wellington engineer who flies in for three separate four-week projects within that period would use 84 days, leaving very little room for a fourth trip.
Frequent visitors, such as grandparents with family in Dubai, should note entry and exit dates in a phone calendar. If the allowance is running low, ask about options before travelling rather than at the border.
Flights to Dubai From Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington
Emirates flies nonstop from Auckland to Dubai, a journey of roughly 17 hours and one of the longest scheduled flights anywhere. There is no nonstop service from Christchurch or Wellington, so travellers from the South Island and the capital connect through Auckland, an Australian city such as Sydney or Melbourne, or Singapore. Allow for a long day: a Christchurch itinerary usually runs to 18 hours or more including the change.
New Zealand Daylight Saving and the Time Gap With Dubai
The UAE stays on UTC+4 throughout the year and never changes its clocks. It is eight hours behind New Zealand during the New Zealand winter and nine hours behind once daylight saving starts in late September. Because the Auckland flight crosses so many time zones, confirm the arrival date shown in Dubai time on your ticket, since that is the date immigration records.
Medicines Packed in New Zealand for a UAE Visit
A medicine that is ordinary in New Zealand may be controlled in the UAE. Before packing, check each active ingredient against UAE rules, carry the prescription and a doctor's letter, and keep tablets in their original labelled packaging. Controlled medicines need either advance approval or a declaration on arrival, and the quantity should cover the trip only, up to a three-month personal supply. Our guide to items restricted at Dubai airport covers medicines, customs channels and passenger allowances.
Dubai Entry for New Zealanders Living in Australia
Hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders live across the Tasman, and Australian residence has no bearing on the way UAE immigration handles a New Zealand passport. Depart from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth and the same free visa is issued on arrival. Kiwis who have also become Australian citizens can travel on either passport, as Australians receive comparable treatment; see our UAE entry rules for Australian passports. Choose one passport for the trip and use it for the airline booking, check-in and both UAE border crossings.
New Zealanders in the UK and Dubai Stopovers on the Way Home
London is home to a large community of Kiwis on youth mobility or ancestry visas, and UK residence makes no difference to UAE entry either. Dubai is roughly seven hours from London and a natural place to break the trip back to Auckland. Staying airside between flights requires nothing; passing through immigration for a night or two triggers the free arrival visa, and those days come off the 90-day allowance. Anyone who also holds British citizenship, for example through a parent born in the UK, has a second passport with free arrival entry, covered in our Dubai guide for UK passport holders.
New Zealand Residents Travelling on Other Passports
Living in New Zealand does not change the rule for a non-New Zealand passport, because entry depends on nationality. For some nationalities, though, a New Zealand residence permit opens an arrival route:
| Passport held by a New Zealand resident | UAE entry |
|---|---|
| Indian | 14-day arrival visa with a valid New Zealand residence permit, renewable once; see UAE entry for Indian nationals |
| Filipino, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Kenyan or South African | Arrival visa of 14 or 60 days for New Zealand residents since June 2026; read the Dubai rules for Filipino passport holders |
| Chinese or Fijian | Visa-free entry on the passport itself |
| Samoan | Visa approved before travel; follow our Dubai visa steps for Samoan citizens |
| Tongan | Visa approved before travel; see the UAE visa for Tongan passports |
Cook Islands and Niue Travellers With New Zealand Passports
Cook Islanders and Niueans are New Zealand citizens and travel on New Zealand passports, so the free arrival visa applies to them exactly as it does to someone from Auckland.
Tourist Visas for Travellers Joining a New Zealand Group
Your own New Zealand passport needs none of the paid visas on this site. They matter when a partner, parent or friend joins the trip on a passport that requires approval before travel. For that person, a 30-day UAE tourist visa suits a standard holiday, while a single-entry visa lasting 60 days covers a longer stay. A companion only stopping over can use a four-day UAE transit visa with an onward ticket.
Add each applicant before payment, attaching a scanned passport page and a photograph for each person; nothing is lodged until one of our consultants has checked it. Relatives applying from overseas enter their own country of residence on the form. Progress shows on the visa application tracker, and the approval arrives by email.
Meetings, Conferences and UAE Jobs for New Zealand Citizens
Kiwi professionals regularly fly to Dubai for client meetings, trade shows and conferences, all of which fit the arrival visa. Accepting work is different. Teachers, nurses and engineers recruited by UAE employers start on an employment visa that the hiring company sponsors, not on the free visitor status. Our explainer on UAE work permits outlines how that sponsorship works.
Staying Beyond 90 Days as a New Zealand Visitor
If plans change and you need longer, raise it before your allowance runs out; whether time can be added depends on your circumstances. Our overview of routes for staying longer in the UAE sets out what may be possible. Each day spent in the UAE beyond the 90 costs AED 50. The UAE scrapped its grace days on 11 February 2026, meaning the fine starts the day after the allowance ends and is payable before you fly out. The guide to UAE overstay fines explains how to look up an amount.
Arriving in Dubai on a New Zealand Passport
The Auckland service uses Terminal 3, the Emirates terminal at Dubai International. After the long flight, join the passport control queue for visitors and hand over your passport; the officer grants the visit visa there and then. Have your onward or return flight details and your accommodation address ready, since questions about the length and purpose of the stay are routine. Admission is the officer's call.
Talk to Our Visa Team About Travel From New Zealand
Most New Zealanders will never need to buy anything from us, and we will say so. Where we help is with mixed groups: a Samoan grandparent, an Indian partner with New Zealand residence, or a friend joining from another country. Message our support team with each traveller's passport and dates. Dubai Visitor Visa answers WhatsApp around the clock, so a question sent in the New Zealand evening still gets a reply.
