South African passport holders who live in South Africa must have their UAE e-visa granted before they fly to Dubai. Since June 2026, those living in Britain, the United States, the EU and six other countries have had a second option: a visa issued on landing, based on their residence permit. Which UAE Entry Route Fits a South African Passport
- Living in South Africa, or anywhere off the qualifying list: get a tourist e-visa through an online application ahead of final bookings.
- Holding residence in Canada, Japan, the UK, Australia, Singapore, the US, South Korea, an EU state or New Zealand: immigration at the airport can grant an arrival visa covering either a fortnight or 60 days.
- Living and working in a Gulf state: the UAE e-visa for Gulf residents may apply, depending on profession.
- Only changing planes in Dubai: no visa, provided you stay airside.
The UAE still classes South Africa as visa-required, so a South African without qualifying residence cannot simply turn up and ask for entry.
The 2026 Arrival Visa for South Africans Living Abroad
South Africa was one of six nationalities added to the residence-based scheme on 25 June 2026, according to the foreign ministry's statement on the new arrival visa. Ordinary passports only are covered, and family members travelling alongside an eligible holder are included. The short version costs AED 100 for 14 days and may be extended once from inside the country; the long version costs AED 250 for 60 days with no extension.
The statement speaks of residence permits. A US tourist visa or a Schengen visa, by itself, does not count as residence, so South Africans relying on one of those should arrange an e-visa instead. Our overview of UAE arrival visas compares the different schemes.
The same applies to South Africans settled elsewhere on the list, such as residence-permit holders in the Netherlands, Ireland or Portugal, Canadian permanent residents and holders of Australian permanent visas. Bring the physical card where one exists.
South Africans in the UK and the eVisa Question
Britain has replaced physical residence permits with digital eVisas, and expired biometric cards stopped being valid for travel on 2 June 2025. A South African in London on a Skilled Worker, Ancestry or settled status therefore often has no card to show a UAE officer. Generate a share code, carry a printout of your status, and if you have no physical document at all, consider a pre-approved e-visa until digital proof is confirmed as acceptable.
South Africans Holding a US Green Card
A green card is a physical permanent-residence document, so South Africans in Houston, Atlanta or New York can present it with their passport at Dubai immigration. Make sure it stays valid throughout the whole trip.
Tourist E-Visas for Trips From Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban
Most South Africans travelling from home use a pre-approved visa. A week of shopping and beaches suits a one-entry tourist visa lasting 30 days, while a holiday combining Dubai with a few days in a neighbouring country needs the 30-day UAE visa with multiple entries.
Longer visits fit a two-month Dubai visa for one entry or, if you leave and return during the stay, the 60-day visa allowing re-entry. Mining, engineering and finance professionals visiting for meetings should pick a business visa for the UAE lasting 14 days.
Documents for a South African Visa Application
- The data page of your green South African passport, scanned in colour, with six months of validity left at arrival.
- A photo prepared to the UAE photo specifications.
- Your booked flight home or onward from the UAE.

Apply in the name printed in the passport. Someone who married recently and updated their ID book or smart ID card, but not the passport, should still use the passport name. Each file is checked by one of our consultants prior to lodging.
Paying in Rand for a Dubai Visa
The visa cards quote US-dollar prices; your bank then turns the amount into rand at whatever exchange rate it applies. Some South African banks require online international transactions to be switched on in the banking app before a foreign payment will clear, so do that first. If a payment fails, message our team before you try again so nothing is charged twice.
Children Flying From South Africa to Dubai
Every child needs a South African passport of their own and a separate UAE visa, or a place on the arrival route alongside an eligible parent. South African departure rules also apply: according to the government's guidance, a child leaving with only one parent should carry a parental consent affidavit or court order, plus a copy of the other parent's ID and contact details. Children travelling on South African passports do not need to carry a birth certificate.
Emirates Flights to Dubai From South African Cities
Nonstop Emirates services leave OR Tambo for Dubai in about eight hours, Cape Town in roughly nine and a half, and King Shaka in Durban in a little over eight. South African time runs two hours behind Dubai, and since neither country moves its clocks, overnight flights from Johannesburg reach Dubai early the next morning.
The December school holidays fall in Dubai's cooler and busiest season, so book flights and apply early. Mid-year holidays coincide with the UAE summer, when outdoor plans suit early mornings or evenings.
Dual Citizens Leaving South Africa for Dubai
Under South African law, citizens are expected to leave and re-enter the country on their South African passport. A dual national heading to Dubai should therefore show the green passport at OR Tambo and can then present a second passport, British for example, at UAE immigration if that nationality enters visa-free; our Dubai guide for British passport holders explains that route. South African Parents Visiting Children Working in Dubai
Teachers, nurses, engineers and finance staff from South Africa make up a sizeable community in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and parents often stay for weeks; grandparents arriving for a new baby commonly choose a 60-day visa. A parent living in South Africa needs their own tourist visa; their child's residence does not cover them, and no sponsor is required. If the plan is to move a parent to the UAE permanently, the resident should look at UAE family residence rules instead.
Dubai Stopovers on South African Itineraries
Dubai is a common connection on the way to Europe and Asia. Remaining airside needs no visa. For a night or two in the city without qualifying residence, choose between the 48-hour Dubai transit visa and a 96-hour stopover visa; both require an onward ticket. Travellers already resident in a qualifying country can use the 14-day arrival visa for a stopover instead.
Landing at Dubai International on a South African Passport
Emirates flights from South Africa arrive at Terminal 3. Travellers using the residence route present their passport with the green card, residence card or UK status evidence, and the arrival visa is issued at the desk. E-visa holders show the approval on screen or paper. Keep accommodation and return flight details handy; officers decide on entry.
Processing Times and Tracking for South African Applicants
Expected turnaround appears on every product, and the express processing option exists for urgent trips. An email confirms your application number after payment, and the online UAE visa status tracker follows the file until the e-visa arrives.
Overstays and Extensions for South African Visitors
On the arrival route, one extension is possible on the 14-day visa, but none on the 60-day version. E-visa holders may qualify for an extension of up to 60 days inside the UAE, depending on how they entered. Former UAE Residents Returning From South Africa
Many South Africans have worked in the UAE and later moved home. Before applying for a visit, confirm that your former residence visa was cancelled when you left and that no traffic fines, unpaid loans or labour cases remain in your name, since any of these can delay or stop a new visa.
