Dubai Visa for Taiwanese Travellers on a Taiwan Passport
Travellers holding a Taiwan passport cannot be issued an entry visa on landing in Dubai, which means approval online, with the e-visa sitting in your inbox, before you check in at Taoyuan. For a typical holiday, the right Dubai visa for Taiwanese visitors is the one-month tourist e-visa with a single entry. Emirates flies nonstop from Taoyuan to Dubai, so once approval arrives the rest of the journey is straightforward.
Does a Taiwan Passport Need a Visa for Dubai?
Always, for ordinary travel. Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs tells ROC passport holders to obtain a tourist or visit visa in advance, applied for through a UAE airline or a sponsor based in the Emirates, such as a hotel, a company or an event organiser. Acting as that sponsor, our team files the application on your behalf. Check-in staff at Taoyuan look for the approval before printing a boarding pass, and an ROC passport without one is not admitted on landing. The UAE has no embassy in Taipei, so there is no office in Taiwan where a visa could be lodged in person.
Many nationalities enter visa-free under the exemption schedule published by the UAE foreign ministry, but Taiwan passports are not covered. Changing planes airside at Dubai or Abu Dhabi airports, without passing immigration, needs no visa. Save Taiwan's overseas emergency number, +886 800 085 095, before you travel.
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland Passports Follow Different UAE Rules
Mixed groups are common on Taiwan to Dubai trips, and each document carries its own rule:
| Passport | UAE entry |
|---|---|
| Taiwan (ROC) | Visa arranged online before departure |
| Hong Kong SAR | Free entry for 30 days, as set out for Hong Kong passport holders |
| People's Republic of China | Visa-free stay, explained in our guidance for Chinese citizens |
| United States | Visa-free stay, covered for American passport holders |
| Macau SAR | Free entry for 30 days; see our guidance for Macau passport holders |
| Japan | Visa-free stay; see our notes for Japanese nationals |
Someone holding a second, visa-free passport can travel on that one instead, as long as it is the document shown at Taoyuan, at Dubai immigration and again on the way out.
Picking the Right UAE Visa for a Taiwan Passport
- One or two weeks of malls, beaches and desert camps: a single-entry visa lasting a month.
- Dubai plus a few days in Qatar or Bahrain before flying home: the one-month visa allowing repeat entries.
- Parents staying through the cooler months with grown-up children working in Dubai: the single-arrival visa covering 60 days, or a 60-day visa for repeated entries when side trips are planned.
- Exhibiting, sourcing or meeting distributors: the UAE business visa valid for 14 days.
- Breaking a long Emirates journey to Europe or Africa with time in the city: a two-day Dubai transit permit, or for longer, a stopover visa lasting 96 hours.
Lunar New Year and the summer school break are busy periods for Taoyuan departures, so apply earlier if your dates fall then.
Documents and Name Spelling for Taiwanese Applicants
Five things go into the application: the biographical page of your passport in colour; a recent portrait on plain white, in line with our UAE photo specifications; confirmed flights; a paid hotel reservation or your host's address; and health insurance that is valid across the Emirates, as our UAE travel insurance explainer describes.
Taiwan passports normally print the given name with a hyphen, such as CHIA-HAO. Type it exactly that way, because booking sites sometimes merge the two syllables into one word. If an English alias also appears in your passport, ignore it and use the name in the machine-readable lines. Children need their own passports and applications even on a family booking.
Renewing a Taiwan Passport Before a Dubai Trip
Your passport should carry six or more months of validity beyond your landing date; Taiwan's consular bureau warns that airlines turn away passengers whose documents fall short. Renewals go through the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taipei and its regional offices, and Taiwanese living in the Emirates can apply at the Commercial Office of Taipei in Dubai. Renew before applying for the visa, since an approval issued against the old passport number cannot be moved to the new booklet.
Applying Online and Paying in New Taiwan Dollars
- Begin with the visa you have picked.
- Select Taiwan for nationality and the place you live for residence.
- Attach the passport scan, the photo and the booking documents. The form accepts names in Latin letters only, not Chinese characters.
- Pay by credit card; the US dollar charge shows on your statement in New Taiwan dollars, usually with a small overseas transaction fee.
- Follow the file through our online status checker and keep the approved PDF on your phone, with a paper copy as backup.
Once in Dubai, remember that the dirham is tied to the US dollar, so its value against the New Taiwan dollar moves only with the US dollar rate. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and cash machines in the arrivals hall give out dirhams.
Dubai Visa Processing Time for Taiwan Passport Holders
Handling time is printed on every visa card, four working days at most, next to the US dollar price; Saturdays and Sundays are the UAE weekend and are not counted. Submitting a week or more ahead gives time to swap an unreadable scan or deal with an extra question. For departures only days away, our express Dubai visa service can speed up eligible files, though UAE immigration always has the final say. Our comparison of Dubai visa costs sets the products side by side.
Taiwan Passport to Dubai: Flights From Taoyuan
Emirates connects Terminal 2 at Taoyuan International Airport with Terminal 3 at Dubai International without a stop, roughly ten hours westbound, and it is the only airline flying the route nonstop. Passengers starting in Kaohsiung or Taichung generally route through Taoyuan, Hong Kong or Bangkok. Buying all sectors on a single ticket means the airline has to rebook you if an earlier flight runs late. At Dubai, immigration checks your passport against the e-visa, so the two must match exactly.
Dubai Is Four Hours Behind Taiwan
Neither Taiwan, on UTC+8, nor Dubai, on UTC+4, changes its clocks, so noon in Taipei is 8am in Dubai. A late-evening departure from Taoyuan reaches Dubai in the small hours, and that landing date has to fall inside the validity dates shown on your e-visa.
Taiwanese Business Travellers and Trade Fairs in Dubai
Taiwanese electronics, machinery and medical-device firms regularly exhibit at Dubai shows such as GITEX. Exhibitions, meetings and sourcing trips fit the business visa. Taking paid work for a UAE company is different: the employer must secure an employment permit and residency first, the process outlined in our walkthrough of the UAE employment permit.
Pack with UAE customs in mind. Taiwan's foreign ministry advises travellers not to carry fresh food or pork products, so leave pork floss and jerky at home, and check prescription medicines against our Dubai airport list of restricted items.
Taiwanese Americans and Taiwanese Living in the UAE
Permanent residence in America leaves the Taiwan passport rule as it is: Taiwanese living in California or New York still apply online ahead of travel and give the United States as their residence. Nonstop Emirates services reach Dubai from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York. Taiwanese who have become American citizens can usually travel on the US passport, which the Emirates admit without any visa.
Inside the Emirates, Taiwan is represented by the Commercial Office of Taipei in Bur Dubai, which handles consular matters including passports and emergency help; its emergency line is +971 50 645 3018. Residents inviting parents or friends from Taiwan arrange a visit visa for every guest, and a host's Emirates ID together with a tenancy contract normally serves as the accommodation document. Moving a husband, wife or children to the UAE for good calls for residence sponsorship, as our overview of Dubai family visas sets out. Taiwanese enrolling at a university in the Emirates follow the student route in our notes on Dubai study permits.
Extensions and Overstays for Taiwanese Visitors
When plans shift after arrival, ask before your last permitted day if your visa allows a one-month extension filed in the UAE or a two-month extension without exit. Every day spent past the limit adds an AED 50 penalty from day one, no grace period applying, and immigration takes payment at the airport on your way out, under the UAE overstay fine rules. If a visa request is refused, read our guide to common Dubai visa rejections before trying again.
