Hong Kong Passport to Dubai: 30 Days Free, BN(O) and Helpers

A Hong Kong SAR passport opens Dubai's door without any paperwork in advance. The UAE counts Hong Kong among its visa-free territories, and the officer at the arrival desk admits HKSAR passport holders free of charge for a stay of up to 30 days. That allowance is a third of what British, American or Australian passports receive, which is why most planning questions from Hong Kong travellers are about time rather than forms. For the general mechanics, read our primer on airport-issued UAE entry.

Hong Kong SAR Passport Holders: Free 30-Day Entry to Dubai

The territory sits in the visa-free column of the exempt-nationality register on the UAE foreign affairs ministry site, and Hong Kong's own government describes the arrangement as visa-free entry for up to 30 days, an upgrade from the earlier visa on arrival. Emirates and flydubai place Hong Kong in their 30-day arrival group as well. In practice, you file nothing and pay nothing beforehand.

Arrive with an HKSAR passport that still has at least six months before its expiry date, proof that you will leave within 30 days, and the name of your hotel or host. The same arrangement applies at Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other airports, as explained in our note on landing at any UAE airport.

Which Hong Kong Travel Document to Show in Dubai: HKSAR, BN(O) or Document of Identity

Many Hong Kong households hold more than one document, and the UAE treats each one on its own terms:

  • An HKSAR passport receives free entry for up to 30 days, confirmed by both governments and by the airlines.
  • A full British citizen passport, held by Hong Kongers who naturalised in the UK, gets the longer 90-day arrival allowance described in our UAE rules for UK passport holders.
  • A BN(O) passport reflects a different status from British citizenship. Airline guidance lists the United Kingdom without saying how BN(O) is handled, so confirm with your carrier before relying on it. The HKSAR passport is the dependable choice.
  • Hong Kongers who moved to Britain on the BN(O) visa but still travel on an HKSAR passport receive the 30-day HKSAR allowance, not the British one, until a full British citizen passport is issued to them.
  • A Document of Identity for Visa Purposes is not covered by the HKSAR arrangement. Ask us before booking.

Use one document from start to finish: the passport named on the airline booking should be the one you show on arrival and again on departure.

Planning a Dubai Stay Longer Than 30 Days on a Hong Kong Passport

The 30 days begin on the date immigration records your arrival, so a late-night landing still uses a full day. Each day beyond the limit adds AED 50 to an overstay fine, starting with the very first, and the full sum is payable before you leave; see the way UAE overstay penalties add up to look one up.

When you already know the trip will run longer, perhaps a long stay with children who work in Dubai, talk to us before you travel. A 60-day UAE tourist e-visa with one entry, issued ahead of the flight, may fit such a trip better, and our team will say so plainly when free entry already covers your dates. If you are in the UAE and your dates move, raise it well before day 30.

Flying From Hong Kong to Dubai: Nonstop Routes, Time Difference and Stopovers

Emirates and Cathay Pacific both fly nonstop between Hong Kong International Airport and Dubai International. The westbound flight takes roughly eight to nine hours depending on winds and season.

Hong Kong runs four hours ahead of Dubai all year, since neither place changes its clocks. Gaining those four hours on the outward flight makes arrival day feel long, and that landing date counts as day one of your 30.

Travellers from Hong Kong bound for Europe or Africa on Emirates often break the journey in Dubai. The free entry applies to a stopover just as it does to a holiday, so no transit visa is needed to step out of DXB between flights, though every night spent in the city reduces what remains of the 30 days.

Dirhams and Hong Kong Dollars: Paying Your Way in Dubai

Both currencies are tied to the US dollar. The dirham is fixed at 3.6725 to the dollar and the Hong Kong dollar trades within its 7.75 to 7.85 band, so one dirham costs a little over HK$2.1 with very little movement from month to month. Cards work almost everywhere in Dubai; ask your Hong Kong bank whether overseas use is switched on and what it charges per transaction.

Hong Kong Households With Different Passports: Who Needs a UAE Visa

Entry depends on nationality, not on holding a Hong Kong identity card. Mixed families often find one member covered while another must apply first:

Traveller in a Hong Kong partyHow they enter the UAE
HKSAR passport holderFree entry for up to 30 days
Mainland Chinese passport holder living in Hong KongNo visa in advance, under separate rules for mainland Chinese passports
Macau SAR passport holderFree 30-day entry, detailed for Macau passport holders
Filipino or Indonesian domestic helperA visa approved before departure, such as a one-month UAE e-visa for a single trip
Indian passport holder resident in Hong KongUsually an e-visa; an arrival visa only with qualifying US, UK or EU documents, set out in our options for Indian passports
Pakistani passport holderA visa in advance, as explained for Pakistani nationals

Helpers from the Philippines and Indonesia deserve particular attention. Filipinos and Indonesians can now be stamped in at a UAE airport if they hold residence in one of nine places, namely the US, the UK, an EU state, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea or New Zealand; a Hong Kong employment visa doesn't qualify. More detail sits on our pages for Filipino travellers and Indonesian travellers.

A companion's file is short: a passport scan, a recent photograph and the family's flight plans, as itemised in our UAE visitor visa checklist. Progress shows on the application tracker. If the family flies within a few days, the priority processing service can shorten the wait.

Business Trips and Trade Fairs for Hong Kong Companies in Dubai

The free entry covers meetings, exhibitions, client visits and conferences, so a buyer from Kwun Tong heading to a Dubai trade show travels on the HKSAR passport alone. Carry the invitation or registration in case the officer asks about your plans. Hong Kong also runs an Economic and Trade Office in Dubai that promotes links with the Gulf, although it does not issue or replace travel documents. Sales teams combining Dubai with Riyadh or Doha should check each country separately, as the UAE entry stamp covers no other Gulf state.

Taking a salaried position is different. Employment requires the company to obtain a work permit and residence for you, as set out in our note on the employer-led UAE work permit process.

Help for Hong Kong Residents in Trouble in the UAE

If a passport is lost or an emergency strikes, the Immigration Department's Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit answers its 24-hour hotline on +852 1868; if the call will not connect from abroad, try adding 0000 after 1868. Chinese diplomatic missions in the UAE, including the consulate general in Dubai, assist HKSAR residents who are Chinese nationals.

Some medicines that are easy to buy elsewhere fall under UAE controls; read our rundown of goods Dubai customs restricts before packing.

Living in the UAE? Hong Kong Visa Rules for Residents Travelling From Dubai

We arrange UAE visas, not Hong Kong ones, but the question comes up often from residents of Dubai. Hong Kong's Immigration Department decides entry by nationality, and having UAE residency does not alter it. Emirati citizens and many other nationalities can visit Hong Kong without a visa, and Indian nationals must complete online pre-arrival registration before travelling. Nationals who need a visa apply through the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate, or directly to the Immigration Department by post or through a sponsor in Hong Kong.

The reverse trip is simpler for HKSAR passport holders who live and work in the UAE. They re-enter on their residence visa rather than the 30-day allowance, and parents or siblings flying in from Hong Kong on HKSAR passports need no sponsor at all.

Contacting Dubai Visitor Visa From Hong Kong

Most HKSAR passport holders can skip us entirely. Reach out when someone in your group carries another nationality, when the visit might run past 30 days, when you plan to travel on a BN(O) passport or a Document of Identity, or when a past UAE stay ended with a fine you never paid. Send the details to our specialists, listing every traveller's passport and dates of travel. WhatsApp support runs around the clock, useful because Hong Kong's business day starts four hours before Dubai's.
