UAE Entry Rules for Canadian Passport Holders
A Canadian passport is all the paperwork a citizen needs for the Emirates. Holders of a regular Canadian passport receive a free visit visa from the immigration officer when they land, valid for stays totalling 90 days in any 180, so a Dubai visa from Canada only needs arranging for people travelling on other passports or for stays beyond that allowance. Permanent residents of Canada who are not yet citizens follow different rules, set out with the other UAE arrival visa categories.
Visa on Arrival for Canadian Passport Holders
Leisure trips, relatives' visits and meetings need no advance visa on a Canadian passport. Canada appears in the UAE's official schedule of exempt passports, and Ottawa's own travel advice confirms a free, multiple-entry stamp covering 90 days within 180. In practice, the UAE visit visa for Canadian citizens is simply the entry record created at passport control at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or any other UAE airport. Nobody holding a Canadian passport needs to buy a Dubai tourist visa for an ordinary trip.
- Carry a passport that will still be valid half a year after your arrival.
- Ottawa notes that temporary or emergency passports work only for leaving or transiting, never for entering.
- Each child needs a passport of their own.
Counting 90 Days on a Canadian Passport
Days add up across any 180-day stretch, and a new arrival does not reset them. A retiree from Ottawa who spends December, January and February in Dubai, then flies home for six weeks, cannot simply return for April; most of those winter days still sit inside the window. Keep a list of arrival and departure dates, and ask us about a longer visit visa before day 90 if you plan a long season in the sun.
Gulf Cruises From Dubai on a Canadian Passport
Winter cruise ships based in Dubai call at Abu Dhabi and other Gulf ports. The same free arrival visa applies at UAE seaports, and every day ashore or aboard in UAE waters counts toward the 90, so check the cruise line's own document rules for other countries on the itinerary, such as Qatar or Bahrain.
Canadians With a Second Citizenship
Ottawa warns that the UAE decides your status from the passport you present, so enter and exit on the same document. Dual Canadian-Emirati citizens are treated as Emiratis when they arrive on a UAE passport, and Canadian consular help may then be limited.
Living in Canada on Another Passport
A large share of travellers needing a visa for Dubai from Canada are permanent residents, workers or students who hold another nationality; Indian and Filipino newcomers form two of the biggest groups. For them, the passport decides the route, and a Canadian residence permit can sometimes change it:
| Your status in Canada | UAE entry route |
|---|---|
| Canadian citizen | Free visa on arrival, 90 days within 180 |
| Indian national with Canadian permanent residence | 14-day or 60-day entry visa, as explained for Indian passport holders |
| Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Kenyan or South African national with Canadian residence | 14-day or 60-day entry visa on arrival |
| US or British citizen living in Canada | No advance visa; see our notes for American travellers and UK passport holders |
| Most other nationalities, including work and study permit holders | E-visa approved before departure |
A permanent resident card is the clearest proof of Canadian residence for the arrival routes. If you are unsure whether a work or study permit counts, check with us before booking, because the eligible list has been revised several times. Everyone else needs a Dubai visitor visa from Canada approved online. For a holiday, the standard Dubai tourist visa from Canada is a one-arrival e-visa lasting 30 days, with the 60-day version suiting longer family stays.
Applying Online From Canada
- Pick the visa that matches the trip and open its form.
- Choose your nationality, then pick Canada under residence.
- Add the passport's photo page, a picture that meets our photo standards for Emirates visas, flight bookings, an address in the Emirates and travel insurance.
- Pay by credit card; Canadian card issuers convert the US dollar amount, often adding a foreign exchange charge of their own.
- Track the Dubai visit visa application through our live application tracker and keep the emailed PDF on your phone.
Because handling never exceeds four working days, sending a Dubai visit visa online request a week or two ahead is enough.
Flights From Toronto and Montreal to Dubai
From Toronto Pearson and Montréal-Trudeau, Emirates flies nonstop to Dubai, with journeys lasting roughly 12 to 13 hours. Air Canada has paused its own Dubai route until the end of March because of the situation in the Middle East, so travellers from Vancouver, Calgary or Halifax usually connect in Toronto, Montreal or a European hub. Canada's travel advice notes that regional tensions can close airspace at short notice, so book flexible fares where possible.
Time Difference Between Canada and Dubai
Dubai keeps UTC+4 without daylight saving. Toronto and Montreal sit eight hours behind it in summer and nine in winter, while Vancouver trails by eleven or twelve hours. Overnight flights from Canada land the following day, which becomes day one of the 90.
Canadian Dollars and Dirhams
The dirham is fixed to the US dollar, but the Canadian dollar floats, so the number of dirhams per loonie shifts week to week. Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued in Canada are accepted across Dubai.
Canadian Families Travelling With Children
Every child, babies included, needs their own Canadian passport. Ottawa recommends a signed consent letter when a child travels abroad with only one parent or with grandparents, and UAE or airline staff may ask for it. Relatives on other passports, such as a grandparent visiting from Manila or Mumbai, need a Dubai visit visa unless their nationality qualifies for an arrival route.
Snowbirds and Winter Trips From Canada
Dubai's best weather, with afternoons in the mid-twenties, runs from December to March, exactly when Toronto and Montreal sit in sub-zero cold. That makes the Emirates a growing alternative to Florida for Canadian retirees, but the 90-day cap matters: unlike some winter destinations, a full five-month season does not fit inside the visa-free allowance. Overstaying adds AED 50 daily, a cost our breakdown of UAE overstay penalties walks through. Some snowbirds split the season, spending part of the winter in Dubai and the rest in Asia or Europe.
Travel Insurance for Canadians Visiting the UAE
Provincial health plans such as OHIP or RAMQ pay little or nothing toward care abroad, and private hospitals in Dubai bill visitors in full. A travel medical policy covering hospital stays and evacuation is essential, especially for older snowbirds, and our notes on insurance for Emirates visitors list what a policy should cover.
Canadian Business Travellers and Workers in the UAE
The arrival stamp covers meetings, conferences and trade shows such as GITEX and ADIPEC, so Canadian executives rarely need a Dubai visitor visa of any other kind. Taking a salaried job is different: the employer must arrange a permit and residency first, as our UAE employment permit walkthrough shows, and a spouse or children joining for good need the sponsorship described in our family sponsorship rules in Dubai. Canadians planning the reverse move can read about relocating to Canada from Dubai.
Cannabis, Medicines and Customs Rules for Canadians
Cannabis is legal in Canada but strictly illegal in the UAE, including CBD oils, edibles and vape cartridges, and even traces in luggage or a positive test can lead to arrest. Some prescription drugs sold in Canada, such as codeine products and certain psychiatric medications, are controlled in the Emirates and need approval from the health ministry before travel. Carry prescriptions in their original packaging and check our Dubai airport prohibited items guide.
Canadian Travel Advice and Consular Help in the UAE
Global Affairs Canada currently advises a high degree of caution for the UAE, citing tension across the region and a terrorism risk. Canada's Consulate General in Dubai is in Jumeirah Emirates Towers on Sheikh Zayed Road, on floor 19, and the embassy is in Abu Dhabi's Trade Towers. Global Affairs Canada's 24-hour emergency centre in Ottawa takes calls on +1 613 996 8885. Registering your trip with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service lets officials reach you in a crisis.
