Dubai Visa for Ethiopian Citizens: Apply Online Before Travel

Ethiopian citizens must have an approved UAE e-visa before boarding any flight to Dubai, and immigration at the airport cannot issue one on arrival. The good news is that nothing has to be filed in person: you apply over the internet from Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Bahir Dar or abroad, and the approved visa lands in your inbox. Our step-by-step UAE visa procedure walks through each stage, from choosing the visa to receiving the approval.

Ethiopian Passport Holders and the UAE Visa Requirement

The UAE foreign ministry's visa exemptions table by nationality lists Ethiopia as "visa required". Ethiopia was also left out of the June 2026 expansion that gave several nationalities an arrival visa based on foreign residence, so an American green card or British residence permit makes no difference to an Ethiopian passport. There is no need to queue at the UAE Embassy in Addis Ababa for a tourist visa either; the process is entirely digital.

Choosing a Dubai Visa From Addis Ababa

Most holidaymakers and family visitors from Ethiopia stay between one and four weeks, which fits a 30-day UAE visa with one entry. A trip that includes a short hop to another country before returning to Dubai calls for the 30-day re-entry visa.

Parents staying for a grandchild's birth, or relatives visiting for most of the summer, usually choose the 60-day tourist visa for Dubai, or the 60-day multiple-entry option if they plan to leave and come back. Importers buying stock or attending a trade fair are better served by the UAE business visa valid for 14 days.

Names, Dates and Documents on an Ethiopian Application

  • The passport's personal page, photographed or scanned in colour; valid until at least six months past your landing date.
  • A photograph meeting the UAE visa photo rules, on a white background.
  • A reserved flight leaving the UAE; our note on flight tickets for a Dubai visa explains what is accepted.
  • Health cover accepted by the UAE for the whole visit; the checkout screen says if it is already included.

Ethiopians do not use inherited family surnames. A person's second name is normally the father's first name and the third is the grandfather's, so copy each field exactly as your passport prints it rather than rearranging names. This also means a parent and child on one application will have different second names, which is expected. Use the Latin-script spelling as printed, even if relatives spell the same name differently. Use the Gregorian dates shown in the passport, not Ethiopian-calendar dates from a kebele ID or birth certificate.

Paying for a UAE Visa From Ethiopia

Each visa card carries a US-dollar price, and nothing is added after the checkout total. Keep the payment confirmation email, which carries your application number. Not every card issued in Ethiopia works for international online purchases, so check with your bank before starting. If your card is declined, message our team before trying again so the application is not left half finished.

Flights From Addis Ababa to Dubai and Sharjah

Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates and flydubai fly nonstop from Bole International to Dubai International in about four hours and fifteen minutes, with several departures a day. Air Arabia and Ethiopian also serve Sharjah, which is a short drive from Dubai; a UAE visa covers arrival at any UAE airport. Travellers from Dire Dawa, Mekelle or Gondar normally connect through Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Time, the International Clock and Your Dubai Flight

Local Ethiopian time counts hours from dawn, so seven in the morning is one o'clock. Tickets and boarding passes use the international 24-hour clock, so read departure times that way to avoid a missed flight. Addis Ababa runs one hour behind Dubai all year.

Arriving in Dubai With an Ethiopian Passport

Ethiopian Airlines uses Terminal 1 at Dubai International and Emirates uses Terminal 3. Immigration officers will want your Ethiopian passport and the e-visa, whether printed or saved on a phone, and you should have your hotel or host details and return booking ready. Questions about why you are visiting and for how long are routine, and the officer makes the final decision on entry.

Ethiopians in the United States Travelling to Dubai

The United States has one of the largest Ethiopian communities abroad, centred on the Washington area. An Ethiopian passport holder living there applies in advance like anyone in Addis Ababa, choosing Ethiopia as nationality and the US as residence; a green card does not unlock arrival entry. Emirates flies nonstop from Washington Dulles to Dubai. Ethiopian-Americans who have naturalised travel on their US passport instead, and our UAE entry guide for US citizens covers that route.

Ethiopian Passport Holders Living in the UK

The same logic holds in London, Birmingham and Manchester. British residence, indefinite leave included, gives an Ethiopian passport no arrival option, so an approved e-visa is needed before the flight. Dual British-Ethiopian nationals can enter on the British passport, as set out in our Dubai rules for British passport holders, but should use the same passport for booking, check-in and every UAE border crossing.

Recent Travel in South Sudan and UAE Entry for Ethiopians

Many Ethiopians trade or work in South Sudan. Since 6 June 2026 the UAE has applied a health-related entry rule to people recently in South Sudan, Uganda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, requiring more than 21 days outside those countries before entry. It applies to anyone who has been there, not only to nationals, so an Ethiopian returning from Juba should time a Dubai trip around it and keep proof of travel dates. Our overview of current UAE entry restrictions tracks whether the rule is still in force.

Ethiopians Working in Saudi Arabia or Elsewhere in the Gulf

An Ethiopian resident of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or another GCC state may qualify for the UAE e-visa route for Gulf residents, but only if the residence permit names a profession the UAE accepts for this route and has enough validity left. Domestic and general workers often fall outside it and use a standard tourist visa instead.

Ethiopian Families Visiting Relatives in the UAE

A large Ethiopian community works in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and relatives often visit. Every visitor needs a visa issued in their own name, since residence held by the relative in the UAE does not extend to guests. Add every family member before payment, give each child their own passport, and carry the host's address and phone number for immigration.

Jobs in the UAE and Ethiopia's Overseas Employment Rules

A visit visa never covers paid work. Ethiopia closely regulates overseas employment: jobs abroad go through licensed recruitment agencies or contracts registered with its labour authorities, and the hiring UAE employer must sponsor a work permit. The employer side is covered in how UAE employers obtain work permits; anyone urged to fly out as a tourist and look for work should decline.

Transit Through Dubai on an Ethiopian Passport

Connecting in Dubai without leaving the airport needs no visa. Leaving the terminal for a night on the way to China, India or Thailand requires a transit visa and an onward ticket; the UAE transit visa for up to 96 hours covers longer breaks.

Processing, Tracking and Urgent Dubai Visas for Ethiopians

A consultant checks each Ethiopian file before it goes to immigration, and processing estimates are shown on every visa product. For short-notice travel, there is an express visa service for Dubai. Type your application number into the UAE visa tracking tool at any time to check progress.

Overstay and Extension Rules for Ethiopian Visitors

If you need longer, ask before the visa ends; an in-country UAE extension of 30 days may be possible depending on your entry visa. Overstaying is charged at AED 50 daily, beginning on the first unpermitted day, because no grace period has applied since 11 February 2026; the total must be cleared at departure.

Previous UAE Employment and Ethiopian Applicants

Ethiopians who once worked in the UAE, including as domestic workers, should confirm that the old residence was cancelled properly and that no absconding report or unpaid fine is attached to their name. Either can block a new visit visa. Mention any past UAE employment when applying, so our team can check before submission.

When an Ethiopian Application Is Declined

Unclear scans, names typed in the wrong order and unpaid fines from earlier UAE stays account for many refusals. Our list of frequent reasons for UAE visa refusal helps you fix the cause. Under the refund policy, a refusal is not refunded, and cancelling before we submit returns the amount paid minus USD 50 for processing.
