The passport you carry, not your address in Doha, decides whether a trip to Dubai from Qatar needs a visa. Qatari nationals travel to the UAE visa-free as GCC citizens. British passport holders living in Qatar get a visa on arrival. Most other expats, including many Indian residents, must have a UAE visa approved before they board: either the eVisa for GCC residents or a single-entry tourist visa for up to 30 days. Your Qatar ID card never counts as a UAE entry document on its own.
Three Checks Before Applying for a Dubai Visa From Qatar
- Which passport will you travel on? Qatari and other GCC passports need no visa. Passports on the UAE's visa-on-arrival list, such as British ones, need nothing arranged in advance.
- Do you hold a second qualifying document? Indian nationals with certain US, UK, EU or other visas and residence permits can also get a visa at the airport.
- What does your Qatar residence permit say? Its expiry date and the profession printed on it decide whether the GCC-resident eVisa is open to you. If it is not, a tourist visa is the fallback.
Qatari Nationals: Entering the UAE on a Passport or QID
Qatari citizens do not apply for anything. As GCC nationals, they are admitted to the UAE without a visa, and the UAE accepts the smart ID cards issued to GCC citizens as travel documents, so a valid QID is enough for a long weekend in Dubai. Keep the passport handy if the trip continues outside the Gulf, since the next country applies its own entry rules. None of the visa cards on this site are meant for a Qatari's own trip, and there is no UAE visa fee to pay at all. Where Qatari families do need help is with relatives or household staff who hold other passports.
British Passport Holders in Doha Need No Advance Visa
UK citizens are on the UAE's 90-day visa-on-arrival list. On landing, a British passport holder receives a multiple-entry visit visa valid for six months from issue, with a total stay of up to 90 days. The same applies on flights from Doha, London or anywhere else, and Qatar residency plays no part in it. The passport itself should still have at least six months left from the day you land.
British expats in Qatar therefore have nothing to buy before a Dubai trip. The exception is a British resident travelling with a spouse or domestic worker who holds a passport without that privilege. Our Dubai entry guide for UK citizens covers the arrival stamp and stay limits in more detail.
Indian Nationals in Qatar: When Visa on Arrival Applies
An Indian passport alone requires an advance UAE visa. Add one of these documents, though, and a 14-day single-entry visa on arrival becomes available, extendable once by another 14 days:
- a US green card, or a US visa with a minimum of six months remaining;
- a UK visa or residence permit, or an EU residence permit or EU-issued visa with six months or more to run;
- a residence permit from Singapore, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan or South Korea, likewise with six months or more remaining.
The Indian passport needs six months of life too, and a fee is charged when the visa is issued at the airport. Look at the expiry date on the supporting document before you fly: once it drops under six months, apply in advance instead. A Qatar residence permit is not on that list, so Indian residents of Qatar without one of the documents above can use either the resident eVisa or a tourist visa, and the UAE visa rules for Indian passport holders set out both paths.
The GCC-Resident eVisa for Qatar Residents
Holding Qatari residence does not qualify you for a visa on arrival in the UAE, but it can open a dedicated eVisa that must be issued before departure. Here is how the conditions map onto a typical Qatar residence permit:

The five-year visa is self-sponsored and comes with its own financial conditions, explained in our guide to the five-year multiple-entry visa. It tends to suit residents who visit relatives in the UAE several times a year and would otherwise buy a fresh visa for each trip.
Qatari Households With Non-Qatari Spouses or Domestic Staff
A Qatari family planning a Dubai break may find that only some of its members are visa-free. A foreign spouse, a child who holds only another nationality, or a housemaid or driver employed by the family all need permission to enter. If they are legally resident in Qatar, the UAE has an entry visa designed for people accompanying GCC nationals. The rule is that they arrive alongside the Qatari relative; border officers may relax this, but nobody should plan around it.
That route asks for a recent colour photo on a white background, a passport copy valid for at least six months including the cover, and a copy or electronic extract of the Qatar residence permit showing profession and validity. Arrange it before booking non-refundable flights. Relatives coming from outside the Gulf take a different path: an ordinary tourist visa on their own nationality.
What a Dubai Visa From Qatar Costs
Qatari and British passport holders pay nothing in advance. Indian nationals using the arrival route pay the issuing fee at the airport. For everyone who needs a tourist visa, the current price appears on each visa card on this site, shown in US dollars, and a longer stay or multiple entries raise it. Each traveller in a group is priced individually. Checkout displays the full amount before you pay, and cards issued in Qatar are converted into riyals by your bank at its own rate.

Documents and Timing for a Qatar Resident's Tourist Visa
For a tourist visa, prepare a clear image of the passport data page, a current colour photo with a white backdrop, your flight plans and somewhere to stay, shown by a hotel booking or your host's Emirates ID. When filling in the form, choose your passport nationality and Qatar as your country of residence, and add any family members before payment so everyone is filed together; children each need their own passport scan and photo. Taking the picture yourself? The UAE visa photo specifications list the exact size. The approved visa arrives by email, and if that message goes missing you can still download a copy of your UAE visa.
Standard tourist visas normally clear within a handful of working days of a complete submission, with each card showing its current estimate. The resident eVisa has to be used within 30 days of issue, so time that application to your travel dates rather than applying months ahead. Application Mistakes to Avoid When Living in Qatar
- Selecting Qatar as your citizenship when it is only your country of residence. The form needs both, and they drive different rules.
- Typing the QID number into the passport number field. Immigration checks the passport, not the Qatar ID.
- Spelling your name the way it appears on the QID rather than on the passport. Transliterations sometimes differ, and the passport version is the one that counts.
- Applying for the resident eVisa with a permit due for renewal in a few months. Renew first, or use a tourist visa.
- Buying non-refundable tickets or hotels before the visa is issued.

Qatar to Dubai by Air or Through the Abu Samra Border
Direct flights leaving Hamad International Airport in Doha take about an hour and a quarter, and Dubai is one hour ahead of Doha. That makes a Thursday-evening departure realistic for a short weekend, provided any visa is already approved.
Driving is a longer undertaking. Qatar's only land crossing is at Abu Samra, into Saudi Arabia, and the road then continues across Saudi territory to the UAE border. Qatari citizens cross both borders as GCC nationals. Expat residents need their UAE visa plus separate permission to enter Saudi Arabia, and everyone travelling in the car should carry valid ID and check that their vehicle insurance covers each country.
Longer Than Planned? UAE Extensions for Visitors From Qatar
If a family visit runs over, the resident eVisa can be stretched once, by 30 days. On a tourist visa, you can request the 30-day inside-country visa extension or a 60-day extension without exiting, subject to your current visa and status.
